If you know that stretch, not far from the Squires cafe, you can just see how it could have happened.

It's certainly a good spot for a bad overtake.

The long smooth curve lulls you into a false sense of security but it's surprisingly limited sighting and not a good place to even consider overtaking in either direction... it doesn't help that, iirc, it's quite over-grown down the inside now which blocks visibility a huge amount!

"Stoyan Andonov Stoyanov was allegedly driving a Bulgarian-registered white Mercedes Actros on the wrong side of the A1246 immediately before the two vehicles collided."

Awful to hear of this really.

I travel this road most working days as its on my doorstep. My profile pic on PH was taken at fairburn only 1 mile away from it.

I don't consider the road dangerous though and have overtaken on it many times and seen many overtakes on it without any issue. The accident had nothing to do with overtaking though.

The real issue is purely the fact that a man was driving a 25+ ton vehicle, while heavily drunk, in a foreign country, ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD!! It could have been the worlds straightest road with no issues to line of sight, chances are he was still going to hurt someone while driving a lorry drunk. Its odd that any lorry should be using it as the A1M runs parallel to it and is normally the best rout for HGV's

Was actually good to see he was convicted and he pleaded guilty. I feel for the family of callum as this will not bring back their son.

As far as I understand the rules, he will serve just half of the sentence. The fact he was drinking is a serious issue.

Nowhere near enough, should be 15 years minimum. I despair of this country sometimes.

Stoyanov, of Maritza, Plovdiv, Bulgaria, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and drink driving. He was banned from driving in this country for ten years and ordered to take an extended driving test. He will be deported at the end of his sentence.

Stoyanov told police he drove for a “very long period" in the right-hand carriageway, York magistrates heard earlier this month. Mr Wark was in the correct lane.

A drink drive test showed Stoyanov had 170 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The UK legal limit is 80.

He was driving a white Bulgarian registered Mercedes Actros 1844 lorry towards Fairburn shortly after 2pm. As he approached the junction with the A63, he hit Mr Wark’s Clio.

There's also weight limits on the road further down so he shouldn't of had any reason to be down there.

It's the old A1, so it may look like the right way to run on a map, by a drunk person at least... it also still all 'feels' a bit like a DC.

Of course it's no excuse and it was an easily avoidable accident, but I do think these old A1 DC's turned into normal A road with opposing traffic can be quite disorientating.

Just up at the Sherburn turn off, even when it was the A1 proper, you'd have people turning the wrong ways up/down the slip roads.

Again no excuse but these legacy designs really don't help bad drivers be any better lets put it that way!
