You must absolutely kill the ball hehe
Urm, i average 140 for a PW, 150 for a 9, 160 for an 8 etc. Driver i vary from 250 carry to 270 carry with the odd one rolling out to 300. So i guess that's probably quite long on average club house lengths? Swing speed ranges from 105-110 with driver.

Yeah I carry my 9 iron 145 with range balls... But I am young and tall with 'long levers' so I get a pretty healthy swing speed!

If your a new player its probably down to your grip, stance or swing. Could be alsorts of stuff tbh.

A lot of people slice it with a driver when they first start playing. I had a wild one eek

Your probably better asking someone you know to have a look at what your doing, or if you dont know anyone suitable go for a lesson.
Ive been playing on and off for a while (only recently got back into it after a few years break) but have left the driver out because of the hit and miss nature i was having with it.

Ive been playing about twice a week for the last few weeks and really want to start including a driver in my game.

Im almost ashamed to say that ive gone against everyone's advice and bought a Taylormade R1 driver rather than lessons. I dont like the idea of lessons, not quite sure why, maybe the thought of it all getting to feel a bit too serious and losing some enjoyment(?) but in my defence the R1 was a good price.

I'm not a "serious" golfer by any stretch, by which I mean I don't play comps etc, but I started to enjoy it much more (and I already loved it) when I took a few lessons and the scores tumbled.

I went from struggling to break 100 a lot of the time to a best of 86 in the space of a month to six weeks after getting some basic coaching.

If you're happy buying nice kit and don't really want to improve your scores then fair enough, but it seems a shame to have that gear and not try and get the best out of it. Low scores is ultimately what the game is about, after all.

I'm about to get to the end of a 4 month break from golf (working away), and I'll be booking some lessons when I get back to get myself going again.

I doubt you'd regret spending a few quid on some decent coaching.

Bit of a newbie question coming up...

Ive got a cheap and cheerful Wilson driver, the only driver ive ever had, and seem to be hitting ok apart from a shocking right slice (so not hitting it ok really!) Id say its about 50/50 regarding how many go straight/sliced.

I havent had my club head speed measured but would be confident its erring on the faster side of things. Iv tried many remedies such as slowing my swing down, different ball position, different swing angles etc and while many of these seem to improve things slightly as soon as i go above, say, 70% power the slice kicks in.

The shaft on it is very flexible and sometimes almost feels as if its playing catch up with my swing.

I can play all my other clubs with relative ease i.e no slices, but dont swing them as fast as i would my driver.

So my question is would the flex in the shaft be a contributing factor to the slice?
Have a look at mark crossfields videos on YouTube. There's a lot of good instructional stuff on there, including some about shafts. He seems to think it doesn't make a lot of difference, but that it's more down to personal feel. I know I prefer the stiff shaft in my new driver vs the regular in my old driver.

I'm not sure you should be swinging the driver noticeably harder than your other clubs. My instructor always tells me that the swing should be the same with every club.

Your slice is likely a combination of factors that being taught the basics should go some way to ironing out.

I've held the club the same way since I started playing years ago.

Right hand at the bottom of grip / top of shaft, left hand thumb inside right hand and little finger on right hand linked between index and middle finger of left hand.

Has never been uncomfortable but recently whenever I play more than about 9 holes I'm getting a really really sore little finger on my right hand by the time the round finishes and the day after, with some swelling of right hand little finger.

Any other suggested grips or suggestions as to why this might have started happening?

Instead of interlinking your right little finger, rest it in the groove between your left first and middle finger.

Best round ever at the weekend in Stableford comp

Shot a gross 75 for a 45pt score ( won by 6)

Don't know what to say really, it was just one of those days and the only time when I kept the 'entire' round together. Started on 11 and was 1 under on 1st tee after 4 birdies .

So ended up with a level back 9 and 3 over on front, didn't hit more than a 4 wood. But what made it special was 26putts as it would normally be 36 as my putting is st, but not last Sunday!

Best gross score before was an 80. Cut from 11.4 to 9.8!

So it can be done, and I can score. All I need to do is learn to chip.

I'm having (group) lessons and the moment and the pro has commented that ideally I need stiffer shafted clubs as I swing the club very fast. I currently have SW-3i TaylorMade 360s with R-80 graphite shafts and some cheapo Hippo John Daly woods with 'Powerflex' shafts.

I have no problems hitting the 6-SW or the 3 and 5 woods but my driver and longer irons are very inconsistent and I hit generally hit my driver far too high.

Is it sensible to get just the longer irons 'reshafted' with stiff shafts or should I be having the whole set done? I think I'm just going to leave the driver at home until I get better generally.

Best round is +16 but I am improving rapidly at the moment so I hope to get down to a consistent mid-teen handicap within a year or so.

Any advice appreciated.

Better-off buying new clubs and selling the old ones rather than re-shafting.

You old shafts are worth nothing.

I've been in a lull. Struggling to break 30 on stableford comps and my handicap has returned to 25 from 23. I don't have the time to play much or practice so it's not surprising.

I played today at my local club, Chipstead. 54 on the front 9 pretty much summed up where I've been but then from out of nowhere I start hitting the ball straight, I feel relaxed and golf is easy. I'm on the 18th, a par 5. 5 iron, 5 iron, 6 iron in the hole from 150 yards. Eagle party My first after 20 odd years of playing (mostly badly). 38 on the back 9 and suddenly I'm itching to play again after thinking of giving it all in around the 7th.

It's a funny old game.

Mmmm, lots of talk here about 'needing' new equipment to improve scores/consistency/distance/height/length.

I played 12 fun holes with my greenkeeper last night (3 handicapper, often plays under par) and for kicks we used an old, cheap, set of ladies clubs (bright pink grips and all smile ), give or take it made no difference to our game - sure, a little less distance but not as much as you'd think and once we were used to the whip we played our normal game. He went through 9 holes two over par and I was six over.

As others have said, lessons are where it's at and not only will you lower your score but it'll improve your confidence and make the game more enjoyable.

Sounds fun, I have shot 6 over for nine with just a 7 iron and putter! Such a fun game if approached the right way smile

The chat on here has been really good of late, I think the thing about equipment is that it is a very pleasurable experience buying new clubs. Something about new shiny stuff that Men typically love, and if you're a golfer smile

That said, in my 37 years on this planet I am only on my fourth full set, typically keeping my irons 6-8 years.

Few extra dogs/fairway woods in there but not bad going.

Same putter for the last 18 years = in bag for life.

Played with an old lad today in an invitation day.

He played with a set of Ping Eye2's that he got fitted for in 1983! I Couldn't believe it, those irons are 4 years older than me! Still played a bloody good game with them too. But I'll stand by what I say. He could be 3-4 shots better handicap wise with more forgiving clubs that'd help him get the ball into the air easier.
Love playing with the old timers, they see the game in a totally different way. No pressure, no hassle, no grumbling about bad shots and always have a few good stories to tell.

I like that.

My trusty set of Williams clubs and my 50p putter gifted me a net 62 in the third round of the club champs today, I'm 7 strokes clear of the field with one more round to play - excuse the brag but I'm dead chuffed smile

That is quite strange for a Club Championship? Even known them to be 36 on the same day!

It's my first year of competition Duncan so I don't know what the norm is, often I don't even know what I'm playing in, I just take my bag over on club day, pay my money and play. There's so many different tournaments, sometimes someone says to me "You're through to the final 16 of the 'whatever' and you need to play next Sunday" when I didn't even know I'd entered it - I just like golf.....smile

Apparently our stroke play champs take place over 8 weeks with a round every other Saturday, a winner's confirmed, prizes given etc and then the top 8 scores go through to match play champs (kind of two tournaments in one), that takes another few weeks (I think) and the final is played over 36 holes using caddies and other stuff I don't know about.

I'll keep you posted - if I ever work out what's happening.........

Well done biggrin

That's different to what ive been in before but it doesn't really matter how they do it. TBH if its run over that long at least it rewards consistent players rather than having a good couple of rounds.

Anyway the best advice I can give after being in a fair few finals and other big games when I used to play a lot.

Or should I say don't do what I used to do. Make a big deal out of it and let it play on your mind. Just go and play your round as its any other round once I stopped thinking about it I started winning more stuff.

Good luck.
