I'll probably post this in the London forum too so apologies for the cross post but does anyone know of any pubs/bars in London that will definitely be showing the Ryder Cup on Sunday? Ideally we are looking for a decent screen with commentary and beer. Preferably not some giant Sports Bar 25 screen Orgasmatron place but if that's the only option then it'll do. Doesn't have to be massively Central, anywhere from Wimbledon to Whitechapel.

Thanks,

TMFD
Sports Cafe at the bottom end of Haymarket for sure.

I posted here a few weeks ago about buying a set of ping clubs off ebay and since then I've spent some time on the range and an hour on a putting green. Tomorrow is going to be my first venture onto a course and I'm really excited but also apprehensive. I'm only playing the 9 hole course at trent lock but I think that'll be enough for my first time. I've decided to go alone so there's no pressure and no one to try and show off in front of.

Place your bets on how many balls I lose.
0! As long as you only use irons! wink enjoy mate!

I know I should leave the driver at home but maybe I'll take it just in case...

Haha, the number of times you use your driver will be very close to the number of balls you lose.

I took your advice and only played off my irons. The 9 hole course (not all par 3's) has a par of 36 and I shot 65. I had 3 drops due to bad tee shots where I ended up on a different fairway and a few poor shots in my short game which I could easily make up. I only 3 putted once and all the rest were 2's with one 1 putt.

I was really difficult not to always go for the hero shot and I had to keep reminding myself to play safe. I can't wait to get out again now.

No mention of the Ryder Cup yet?

The atmosphere's extraordinary, it's like a Premier League derby, very un-golf like but mighty exciting.

Ryder Cup has its own thread, as do all of the majors generally.

Had the best round of my life yesterday!

As stated in my previous posts ive always enjoyed golf but never played it as much as id have liked too. Add to that the fact i had only ever played on full 18 hole courses a hand full of times prior to July this year my game was somewhat rusty!

Ive really got stuck into it over the last couple of months making sure ive tried to go at least once a week and the driving range a couple of times a week. My scores leading up to yesterday were (iirc) 98,123,117,98,96,91. Yesterday's was........85!

I approached it as a practice round more than anything, a round to experiment with different club choices and wasnt too fussed on the score until about the 6th hole when i started to notice my score was the lowest it had been up to that point.

My front 9 came in at 44 and the back 9 at 41. I even had my first ever birdie on a par 4 hole and par'd (4) my favourite hole on the course (up until now my best was a 6!).

However my best, and most satisfying, shot of the day came on a par 3 150yrd. Id usually use an easy 7, but with the wind in the right direction i decided on a 9 and the result was it landing about 6ft from the pin along with a bloody impressive pitch mark!

My score from a couple of weeks ago. Finally down to proper single figures.
I started playing 5 years ago this month. I've had 5 lessons in that time which sorted grip and posture (that always will be an ongoing battle for any golfer)
Once you understand the components of a swing you can start to work and alter them.
Christonabike - 5 years to play to 5??

How often do you play?

Came 3rd in society match today, shot 89 and scored 32 points. Blobbed 4 holes.

More importantly I managed to win my knock out cup semi-final!

Thought I'd blown it when I blobbed the first 2 holes and the other guy had 11 points through 4 holes but I managed to turn it around.

Had 4 birdie putts today - only made 1 of them unfortunately.

My first set of irons I bought last year.
Won for £190 on eBay, sold for £220 6 months later as I hated them.
Amazing how Ping stuff holds its value.

Hopefully I'll love them. Maybe Wednesday I'll get to the driving range after work.

eBay makes changing clubs very very cheap, or even profitable.

Basically as long as you sell them with better photographs than you bought them, you shouldn't lose anything, even after eBay fees.

Well after my horrible round of golf the other week at Barhill golf club I'm playing there again on Thursday tee off at 07:06 sleep I'm hoping for a better game but I'm not expecting much hopefully I won’t catch a stinker of a lie off the first like before, we will see its golf after all.

I had another lesson last night and was hitting it ok (but only ok) until the pro tried to get me to reduce my hip away and replace it with more of a rotation, I really struggled with strike after this.

A bit disheartening as I have a golf day on Friday where I was hoping to surprise a few people.

Hopefully half an hour on the range before will help, if not I'll go back to the sway until I can get more practice time in.

Ive been at the range and on lessons and felt ive been hitting better than ever. Walked out to play over the weekend and stank up the place for 6 holes. Couldnt get my grip right over hitting chips and approach shots. Nothing felt right.

Then as if by magic started striking like I have been taught too. Nailed a green from 180 yards. Ive played the same hole 10 times and never once nailed the green.

Keep at it it will all come. Im still failing on my follow through and struggling to come through the ball lower and with control.

I'll be honest. I'm pretty addicted to golf. I'll play as much as possible work depending. I try to play as least every saturday and sunday, if I'm on nights you can call that 4 times a week plus a few hours practicing as well.
Short irons, wedges and my putter is where my handicap is…. and that is exactly where I spend the time practising. (I spent 3 hours yesterday and hit about 300 balls)
