Only time for 9 holes this weekend but managed a much more consistent 42. 2 pars and 7 bogies.

I haven't had chance to play any holes this past week, however me and a few friends went to TopGolf in Watford, basically a cross between a driving range and ten pin bowling. There are a number of targets out on the range, which award points to you via microchipped balls.

Good fun, and still practising at the same time!

Had a cracking lesson at the weekend. My swing from lesson 1 to 4 is now completely different. Taller and simpler and much better.

Gaining distance just from tidying up small errors overswing/wrists etc. My putting still stinks.

Ordered some Galvin Green winter trolley mitts today (as a Christmas present for someone to give to me!).

Also ordered a pair of FJ cold weather gloves and also one of the FJ super dooper wet weather gloves.

Nothing will stop me playing golf this year!!

You need to go and kick all this spondooly new stuff around the yard for a while, lest you look an ATGNI if you duff your next drive off a busy 1st tee!

I have never quite understood why people ask you what club you took for any particular shot. Unless 2 players have exactly the same ability and read the conditions in the same way let alone execute the shot well, th einformation is useless. Comments?

Say I know I'm a club longer than my mate.

If he dropped it in the brook in front of the green with his nicely struck 7 iron, then I'm thinking the 8 iron I was about to hit might not be a good idea.

That way I can hit it into the brook with a poorly-struck 7 iron, instead of a well-struck 8 iron. See the difference?

No?

Well, the difference is I make a double and have my shot-making to blame, instead of making a double and blaming my club selection. Much better.

Its so you can blame your mate when you shank one or ditch it short. Or often in my case assume I can lay up and then bang it way past the green and feel like killing my friends.

You shouldn't ask anyway.... I think it's classed as askng for advice which is against the rules!

That's true, in competition you shouldn't ask. But, if you're sneaky, you can check the bag to see what's missing. Poor-form to get caught though...

We have a very deceptive, severely downhill 18th with a very sheltered tee at our club. In inter-club matches if we didn't have the honour we would leave our bags a good way off the tee and bring drivers with us to the tee. More often than not, the other team would follow the prompt and play one or both of their drivers into trouble. We'd then replace our drivers and hit a 5 wood or long iron into play.

"Must be windy up there today..."

Also you can volunteer the information to your fellow player, but you cannot ask.

Interesting, does the rule apply after you have both played the ball, ie it is not relevantto the next shot?

I've had tendonitis - tennis elbow, golfers elbow, call it what you will - for the last 10 days caused by too much golf and my 'If I get both feet off the ground and swing my club so fast that I get lost in my own vortex I can reach that green from 350 out' mentality.

So.....not being able to resist playing golf any longer, yesterday I strapped my elbow up tightly (old sock with the end cut off and duct tape) went out and played very gentle golf. Despite my movements being restricted and my effort being reduced by a good 50% my drives are almost as long as normal, far straighter and the ball is consistently coming off of the middle of the club.

Never before have I been able to tell myself that slow, controlled and precise swings will benefit me but now, after going round 12 over par off of a 15 handicap and with dicky elbow tendons, I can believe it.

For those of you, who, like me, believe you have to create Hurricane Katrina levels of force off the tee, do yourself a favour, give it a go, nice and slow. smile

Great post Cheddar, likely had much better timing/lag with a controlled swing smile

Big improvement in my game was the shift to slow and easy. Big stick is now long and straight and the 3n5 are following.

Golf is all about tempo. You don't need to slow things down but you have to learn that keeping your swing in a good tempo and balance will create extra distance. Pro's swing at 80% power, not to say they can't hit one with 110% power but accuracy/distance comes through a well timed swing.

Regards the golf elbow, do you frequent the range a lot? Range mats do a lot of damage to bodies without knowing. I avoid like the plague. Hateful places.

Getting chilly in the morning now!

31 points yesterday, quite pleased with that considering we were waiting around for an hour on the 1st tee!
