If you see a dog go after another dog, how do you discourage it when it comes for your dog? Assume you've tried roaring at it to no effect. It's not interested in you or its owner shouting, how do you snap it out of attack mode?

My best idea was to try finding some kind of (non-harmful) deterrent spray, if such a thing exists?

If you face it, hold both front legs, then jerk them apart, it can rupture the heart or something.

Might be worth a try....

Edit...on second thoughts, that might be bit harsh. Send it a strongly worded email.

Grab it by the collar works so far for me.

Too many around here let their dogs roam free knowing they are nasty.

I can either intercept or let my dog deal with it.

Usually I intercept as other people get upset when their dog gets hurt when attacking ours.

I let mine deal with it. He's quite good at using appropriate force. Depending on the size he'll either throw it on it's back and hold it down by the throat while punching it in the bo11ocks (like the mastif last night) or pick it up and run around with it untill he gats bored and throws it away.

had this the other night whilst I was walking Denzil, my Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

He was rescued with no history but I presume he had altercations with large dogs in the past, as he does not like them at all now.

I came around a corner to see 2 people with a couple of boxers off lead. I pulled Denzil's lead in short and walked in a big arc around the people.
I thought it was quit a clear indication I was trying to avoid them.

Anyway the two boxers came over and sort of surrounded Denzil, one was worse than the other.

A sharp smack/tap to the muzzle saw that one scarper off and the other soon lost interest now it's friend had gone.

It annoys me a lot when people walk there dogs off lead and cannot control them.

No doubt when they got home they told everyone how a vicious Staffy had tried to maul there dogs rolleyes

So, in answer to the question by the O/P...a quick tap/smack to the muzzle worked in this case.

Could possibly go wrong though depending on the dog that's attacking

Our dog trainer's method was to pick up one of the dog's back legs. It messes up their balance so they'll instinctively turn around to see what's up. She said whatever you do there's a good chance you'll get bitten so at least you've got a bit of distance to hope they recognise you first...

I haven't had it happen yet. I'm only a couple of years into dog ownership so perhaps it's paranoid but I do feel a sense of inevitability about my dog getting into some kind of altercation at some point.

Usually she submits and flops onto her back like a shameless tart which diffuses the situation but she has stopped and given a few a few warning barks when she's been chased.

Whilst I was having my dog treated a couple of weeks ago because it was attacked whilst we were out walking, I asked the vet that same question.

Best answer: Air horn.

And not one of those poncy ones off Ebay, a proper one bought from a marine shop (and they don't need to be that big either).

That also seems to put your face right in front of the bitey end.

There is two dogs that go for my Lab, a blue something with white eyes we don't see any more, the owner is a tt and doesn't keep it under control.
The other is a collie that backed my dog in a ditch ,then Millie went for it, the owner wasn't very happy, tough.
Now they avoid each other, job jobbed.
