Hi Guys!

I've been without a car for the past 6 months, as I've just not needed one, but now the time for a new (to me anyway) car!
I'm in the market for a MK5 Golf GTI. Do you reckon it is possible to find a nicely looked after one for my Budget?

I'm thinking of approximately 70-80k mileage, and ideally would like Sat-Nav & Leathers ( I just think it makes the interior look better). I also think the 5 door looks better so don't really want a 3 door.

Manual or DSG is another consideration of mines, preferring a manual as my mum who will also drive the car is more comfortable with one, but shes open to the idea of an automatic(DSG) if it is generally thought to be a better car.

Your opinions and or knowledge of cars that match my specification demands will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks again,

Faz

You will struggle to get a bog standard one for £6k, on AT at the moment the lowest millage for 6k is 96k, plus no options.

I would substitute leather for xenon headlights though, and maybe up your budget? Personally I would spend about 10k and get a edition 30, they are unlikely to loose any money.

Or maybe look at a focus ST?

Agreed - you'll either have to compromise on the car or up your budget to about £8k I'd say. Great cars though, so worth taking your time to find a good one.

Hey!

Thanks for the quick replies. Admittedly not what I wanted to hear. I'm not in a massive rush (I've held out for 6 months, so a little longer wont hurt!) so I am hopeful of finding a standard one within budget. I am willing to make compromises with regards to the spec, but mileage and number of doors are something I do not have much flexibility on.

Thanks again

Doors? Fair.

Mileage? Don't discount a car that's been driven a bit.

Imagine:

100k car; serviced every 10, two belts done. 6k.

70k car; servviced every 20, one belt done. 7k.

Which is better value?

Hi guys, selling my golf gti to make way for a 3 series:

2005 05 VW Golf GTI 2.0 Turbo
5 door
Metallic Silver
DSG Gearbox with paddles (smooth gear changes with no issues)
Full black heated leather seats with electric lumbar adjust
Center arm rest
Multi function steering wheel
Air conditioning
Dual zone digital climate control
6 cd changer
Auto lights with headlight wash
Rear parking sensors
2 former keepers (VW then owned by same lady since 2007) then me
96k miles
FULL VW SERVICE HISTORY on time every time
Last service at main dealer @ 92k miles inc cam belt/water pump
DSG serviced every 40k miles at main dealer
Mot till 17 July 2014 (no advisories on last mot)
Tax till end of May 2014
2 x keys
Hpi clear
Book pack, manual etc
Conti sport tyres all round with good tread
Recent full refurb on alloys in anthracite finish
Main thermostat recently changed

Balance of the Warranty Direct Gold warranty approx 10 months which is transferable to new owner

I will keep it short and simple with the list above, other than that the car drives spot on and in very good condition considering age/mileage. Has a few curb marks on front wheels only and a few marks here and there again nothing that deters overall appearance of the vehicle.

Priced at 5450.00 which i believe is a bargain considering the maintenance record, low owners and warranty.

THATS A CAR THATS FOR SALE ON ANOTHER FORUM, IF YOUR INTERESTED LET ME KNOW AND ILL SEND YOU THE LINK TO IT,

ITS NOT MY CAR

It's not mine by the way

Thanks for that Dr G. You never think that unless somebody writes it down! I suppose I can always open my search out to include a higher mileage car - provided the service history is up to scratch and backed up by reciepts.

A4Cabrio - I appreciate you posting the details up about that car. It did look good but unfortunately it is sold frown

They are good cars, I had one 3 years ago and the only thing I had go wrong was the pcv valve(think that's what it's called) it's en easy fix and cheap. They look much better with the 18" wheels but white worm was a problem with them. Main dealer servicing is quite reasonable, keep checking the oil as they do use a bit, but look after it and it'll look after you.

You'd seen that car advertised else where then?? I seen it on a bmw forum, it appeared a few days ago, it did seem a good price.

You should be able to find a nice one for that money but will be high-ish miles (80k +). I got mine recently recently (2006 5dr DSG) and have been really pleased with it. Phenomenal all rounder smile

Try and find one that has been well looked after with a good service history. DSG box also requires an oil change at 40k and the cambelt on these should be changed every 60k/ 4 years. The good cars tend to be kept for a long time (the lady who had mine previously had it for 5 years) and are snapped up quickly. The abused rubbish with more owners than service stamps just sits on sale for ages.

On the options front Leather seems to wear quite badly. The cloth seats seem much harder wearing, mine even after 8 years still look and feel relatively fresh. The tartan effect gives it a bit of extra character too. As for Sat Nav, the factory unit these had will be really dated by now. I've retrofitted an RNS 310 to mine which has 2012 maps with 7-digit postcode support and makes the interior look more modern.

Oh and as for mileage, a 70k car thats spent its life bouncing of potholes round town with kids in the back will be in significantly worse condition than one that's done 100k motorway business miles.

You'll be looking at a 2005-2006 I guess
As above find one with xenons
The cloth holds up well and are nice IMO

Bearing in mind age of car average mileage would be near 100k
As long as service and cambelt done don't worry about mileage too much

Cambelt shouldn't really be a deal breaker, just budget £350 to get it sorted and get it done quickly if it is over age/mileage.

Not sure if front wings have been mentioned, but check for rust. VAG were offering part goodwill up until 18 months ago, and I was lucky enough to get my wife's car sorted fully FOC.
Once they start to bubble, even a small bi of paintwork, they just spread so quickly.

My wife is second owner on her car, early 2005 model, air con pump was replaced by first owner, which is not uncommon, otter than that, just the odd service items like sticky calipers and tyres really.
It did just recently have the thermostat replaced too, which was a bit of a job by all accounts.

Great car, and whenever I drove it, the mpg seemed poor on short blasts at 22 ish mpg but when she drives it the DIS always reads mid 30's, so can be pretty economical too.

I was looking for a Mk5 Golf GTi (I assume you are keeping a keen eye on mk5golfgti.co.uk). Autotrader seemed a bit more expensive than the forum. The issue with the forum was finding an unmolested one!

Anyway, I was spoilt for choice (I was looking with a budget of up to £10k) and I ended up buying the above car. Ive done a few miles in it already and its sweet as a nut.
As previously said, this car was checked on the dot every year (~10k) belts done and cambelt done.

Cheers,
Garf

Just a quick update guys. Collected the car yesterday! Wow! What a car. I know know why they say the Golf GTi is an almost perfect all rounder. Once again a massive thanks to Andrew who couldn't have described how amazing the condition of the car was through words. Totally genuine car, and a great guy to deal with! beer

Was well worth the trip up north!

Pics to follow!

Magic, get some pics up for us.

If I come out of the company car scheme a MKV GTI is the first (and probably only!) thing I'll be looking at.

As promised...

These are pictures taken by the seller, but I assure you, they do not do it justice! I Cant wait to get the camera out at the weekend and take a few snaps of my own! Hopefully the weather will brighten up a bit more too! biggrin

Cheers,
Faz

edited to add - The wheels are immaculate and look a million times better in the flesh. It also comes with the 17" Monza wheels as winter wheels as does the Original Badge, which I have on at present.

Thats good to know! I read many reviews of them, and they really are held in high regard! Really persuaded me after reading a few! Heres hoping you find one equally as good as mines! smile
