So in 2011 the 530d F10 goes from 245hp to 258hp. Wikipedia shows us:

N57D30O0 2,993 cc (2.993 L; 182.6 cu in) 245 PS (180 kW; 242 hp)@4000, 540 N·m (400 lb·ft)@1750-3000 5000 2008

N57D30O1 2,993 cc (2.993 L; 182.6 cu in) 258 PS (190 kW; 254 hp)@4000, 560 N·m (410 lb·ft)@1750-3000 5400 2011

I'm interested to know how and what the differences are between the N57D30O1 and O2. The web searching so far doesn't really tell me much. Is it a remap or a whole different injection manufacturer or a different turbo unit etc etc?

Chaps?

Well one difference is that the later engine with more power has better fuel consumption.

Which suggests to me that it's not just an improved map but likely a change in actual components. Did the F10 always have stop/start on the 6 cylinder cars?

Also does anyone know exactly when the combox was installed. Annoyingly the earlier cars of the first year didn't have it and then they did. It's a worthwhile advantage to have.

I guess if there was only a really definitive diary list of specification changes somewhere on the internet for the F10 that would be really useful. Can't find one though.

I'd not be surprised if it was just a hike in the fuel pressure, that gives better vaporisation to give a better burn which in turn gives better consumption and power.

The new one is aluminium the old one iron I believe. Thats why it was faster than the iron engines 286 bhp of the twin turbo version until of course the latest 300+ twin turbo version in aluminium came out.

....and if you can decipher that little lot fair play !!!! lol

Nope, the M57 was part iron. The F10 always came with the N57 which is all aluminium. The 2011 jump in power was caused by a tweak as seen by that years jump in power for the 530/535d. It's that tweak I'm interested in understanding.

Looks like nobody knows.

Is there a more techy BMW site that members know of that I could try?

I doubt its more economical in the real world, its probably just better at the NEDC consumption tests.

Hi, resurrecting this thread... we're looking at getting an F11 530d and I did some digging and I have got the following: Looks like there's quite a bit different between 245ps and 258ps engines: Turbo, Intake manifold, Injectors, Cylinderhead and ECU are all different:

I've an F10 535d 60 reg day in day out commuting I'm getting about 40mpg, when I go on longer trips mainly motorway I'm getting nearly 45mpg - how someone can get 60mpg or above 50mpg out of it is beyond me I've tried 60-65mph or 90mph frankly it doesn't make much difference sure its less but were talking very little. So going slower than 60mph in 8th it starts to change to 7th.

So what's the secret?

I've yet to do a 200 mile straight trip the trips so far have been give or take make 90miles each way.

Yes it does, it makes an enormous difference. A cruise at 60-65mph will average 50-54mpg in my 530d whereas at the higher speeds you are doing well to manage low 40's.

Well 60-65mph doesn't deliver that mpg in my 535d far from it

90mph isnt even 2k revs in 8th

Hang on youve got a 5 series and twin turbo mine 3series and 30d not 335d.

Going to basildon M25 A12 no holdups 55mpg mostly middle lane and eco pro going at 70mph this was when with the SE suspension going on the outside lane was far too floaty and wallowy, can only get better only few hundred on the clock ,can I say again the AC schnitzer suspension is a revelation.

Is that door to door mpg or do you reset it for the M way sections.

So? Basic physics tells you the wind resistance at 90mph is considerably higher than it is at 60mph.

Both journeys there and back welsh ,I know it sounds crazy but genuine ,no hold ups either way, actually got up to 60+ on the M25.

This car seems better mpg than my 12od auto 177bhp I had. It will never get the 72 mpg on the M4 one night for 15 miles at 55-60mph with a reset at the beginning of the experiment, but everyday driving seems the same or better,
