In-laws are having to move to S. Yorkshire and have noticed some properties in Thorne on Rightmove.
We don't know the area and it will be their first visit soon.
Any advice or recommendations please?

Check the local press and environment agency for flood plain information...

Nice and close to the M18, quite a few shops and not a bad area. I'm a few miles from there and it's decent enough.

Thanks for the info. They are moving from the south due to job re-location.

Thorne is OK but probably not the best place to move to from down south I have friends who live there who like it and friends who live in a village just out side and don't even drive through. It depends what your in laws want where they are going to work and what the budget is there are in my opinion better areas.

I'll second this. Not the best area. Moorends near by isn't nice either frown

I lived in Thorne for twenty years all through my childhood, my parents and some friends still live there. I live about ten miles away now. Pass through it everyday, it's ok, not as nice as it used to be but all depends what your used to and which area of Thorne your moving to.

We moved to Howden in 99 & love the place. Not masses of nightlife, but genteel market town with good quality of life. Leeds/York/Hull & Doncaster/Sheffield amenities all very accessible via relatively quiet motorway network. Plus we have a fast train to the smoke that stops in Howden.

Selby also a nice enough town.

Probably easiest for your folks to spot the types of properties they like & we can give a view on the areas?

Stu that sounds great for them. Have forwarded your suggestions and gratefully received. Their heads are in a spin with it all. We will be regularly visiting, so keen to get it right for them.

Ok, Doncaster is really well connected in terms of road and rail services. By Rail Sheffield 30 mins, Leeds 35, London 1h 35m, easy access to the A1 M1 for north south travel and M62 east west, there is an airport but not that many fight I don’t know why.
As has been said there are loads of nice villages around if that is what you want the really nice ones are not cheap. However in my opinion the areas to start looking at are Tickhill, Bawtry, some parts of Sprotborough, there is a large residential area to the south of the town near the Racecourse called Bessacarr which has houses in all price ranges.
I hope that is a good start, any other questions fire away, you will find we are a friendly lot up here, and have some fantastic roads but don’t tell them down south.
Good luck Johnny

Without wanting to offend anyone, I'd not choose to live 'in' Thorne under normal circumstances. If you do visit there, a trip down the road to Moorends should make your/parents mind up. I'd live in the locality yes, but there's many places around abouts or in a district of Doncaster that I'd prefer.
