Hi All,

My S4 (2010, 40k, full history) has started to occasionally rattle badly for about 3 seconds from cold start up, then sounds a bit 'metallic' for a while. Anyone else's do this? Or is it time for a visit to the dealers...

Many thanks

Mine (2010, 26K, full history) does sometimes rattle when it starts from cold. It doesn't do it often, just occasionally. Didn't realise it was the timing chain.

Thanks for the reply Chris, managed to listen with the bonnet open this morning and catch the noise back of the engine and sounds like the chain catching the casing.

If they've been left sitting for a while there's a slight noise from the chain on startup.

The 3.2 FSI the 3.0 TFSI is based on did suffer from timing chain issues so if you're worried get it looked at.

I barely use mine nowadays, so that's probably the reason in my case.

Thanks all, hasn't made the noise this morning or yesterday. Very odd, is it possible for the engine to stop in a position to allow to oil to drain back out of the tensioners?

It seems they need to sit for 2-3 days before they'll do it.

I've a 2009 car here that's been started every day this week and it hasn't made the noise once. When I started it on Saturday gone I know it hadn't run for at least 3 days and did make a noise for the first second or so on startup.

Update, visited Audi today for a couple of warrenty repairs. They want to keep the vehicle over night to test how long the noise lasts on cold start.

Noise is happening now everytime it has been left off for over 6 hours.

I know... Glad I have the extended audi warranty! Just hope that audi agrees that there is a problem, got a feeling they will say the noise goes within 2 seconds so no issue.. Just like the B7 S4.

So booked in for the 3rd June, I take it no one else's makes this noise? Be aware you can't hear it inside with the door shut, if they say it's normal how do I proceed?

Ask to trade it in where it's being inspected, if they wont give you normal trade price because of the noise demand its repaired under warranty.

Update: I swapped the oil to Millers Nanodrive CTS 5w-40 back in June and ran it for 100 miles then changed it again (along with oil filter). I am glad to report that I haven't heard the rattle in 4 weeks!

Out of interest is the Millers oil certified to the appropriate Audi spec? Just wondering - I use non-Audi approved oil in my S8 usually but the S5 has mainly had the main dealer Shell branded oil

Nope not Audi spec, however recommended by Opie. The oil usage has also stopped, used to go through a litre of castrol edge every 3k miles.
