History Books on Rome

After watching the HBO series Rome I fancy reading a book(s) on the Roman Empire. Would like to read about the wars with Carthage, the Emperors and the decline of the Empire.

Any recommendations? Thanks

For the decline you've got to read "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" by Edward Gibbon.
Bear in mind a lot of the book deals with the Eastern Roman Empire though.

Colleen MucCullough's Master's of Rome series is an amazing account of Rome from about 100Bc through until the death of Mark Anthony. It can be heavy going at times, but she pretty much sticks to the true history.

Another vote for Rubicon. Tom Holland books are very readable.

Very readable books, he has done others.
