I've experimented a little, because (on my car at least) if I use the recommended settings, I can't get the nuts off with half inch drive kit.

At 180lbft, they come loose.

At 190lbft, they come loose.

At 200lbft, they don't come loose.

So I use a 3/4 inch drive breaker bar (with an adapted wheel nut).

when I bought my car it came with a 5 foot long torque wrench, was told use it as the car cost a dam sight more than not listening to good advice.

I've used this with no issues when car is on a jack.

It torques up the nuts to FT (Fully* Tight), occasionally the torque wrench moves the nut a tad before it clicks.

Halfords sell a suitable torque wrench which gets very good reviews and has served me very well. It really doesn't take long to do either.

Thanks.

Nonetheless, that centre lock torque setting is different to the information in the Owners Manual which is still downloadable from 'Showroom' eg P12. https://www.dropbox.com/s/h2naa8j9dojsdgg/SR3_manu...

So as this sort of thing tends to be quite important on a racing car, which one is the correct setting please? If it's now the above, since when and isn't it time to update the OM? Fair enough (as I suspect is the case) that things evolve through firsthand works experience, but obviously every Customer needs to be kept promptly updated.

Cheers

hello, the above 240 ftlbs is correct. it is a difficult task to keep everyone update with changes. a notice was put on the spares truck last year with a sheet to add your name to if you wanted to receive technical bulletins, to which some people filled in, but a disappointing number did not. otherwise, bulletins get sent to teams and distributors.

I understand the difficulty of telling everyone and the lethargy of others isn't going to help but when there is only one per wheel, this torque setting is rather important!

Please include me in those tech bulletins. Should I email Radical or pm you?
Kind regards.

Well I thought I was getting bulletins. Has that stopped?
BTW which bulletin was it in?

A woeful response, I'm afraid, which does not seem to fully address a manufacturer's responsibilities under product liability laws https://www.gov.uk/product-liability-and-safety-la...

Not all Radical owners/users attend Radical events at which the spares truck is present.

if you could also include what model car you have, then relevant ones will get sent out when they are issued.

i torqued mine up to 200 lb/ft last week on track and now 3 of them are seized!
with the car on the ground.brake pedal hard down, the 5' torque wrench (set at 500 lb/ft) is still turning the wheel before the nut will budge a mm! any ideas how to get these nuts loose as ive got a sprint next week, and trackday rubber on the car at the moment?

Try the Heath Robinson combo of quicklift handle slid on end of a real strong 3/4" drive breaker bar (ours happens to be a Halfords Pro), a tip given to us by the ever helpful DD; it has never failed to do it for us over something like four years.

Forget about undoing torque figures, just get the beggars off and when you do, have a proper butcher's at all the mating surfaces because there must be something not right about them; maybe rough and pitted so locally binding rather than nipping evenly over the full circumference? - i.e. it'd shouldn't be that difficult (even at the newly discovered 240 ft.lbs laugh)
