Flashman Appreciation Thread

These popular books highlight one of the best literary characters ever created. There is a bit of Flashman in all of us. He is a rogue, coward, misadventurist and...oh yes, a toady.

I have read the series and found them to be somewhat awesome. Even 3 years after finishing the last book I am now considering getting through them again. Haven't felt that impulsion since reading the Amtrak Wars series.

One of my favourite scenes is where he is an unwilling participant in the charge of the light brigade. Brilliantly written and really very funny.

What are your thoughts on Flashman and what are your favourite scenes?

I read quite a few of them some years ago - enjoyed them all.

There were some bits though where he comes across as a bit of a tt - the one where Harry "Scud" East was killed wasn't nice. I know, I know, it's only fiction.

And also serves to further express the ttishness of Flashman. I think the fact that he admired him probably says more than anything

I thought that our hero was much less nasty in the latter books. He raped his father's mistress in Flashman, yet became rather less brutal as time went on. Just as big a rogue though, which was his appeal

Agreed, he mellows with age. I love the idea of him sitting in some old wingback in a London club remembering his prime. Reminds me of the Rowley Birkin QC character from the fast show.
