I need to get hold of a new radio for my racing needs. (mainly Le Mans) Currently I have a cheap Carrefour own branded jobbie which I use with noise cancelling earphones. Problem is reception can be patchy especially around Le Mans, with the signal particularly bad around the Final Chicane area.

I thought I'd get hold of one before the Silverstone WEC next month. Are there any good all-in-one radios that would do away with wires that could also be heard above the noise of the cars? I'm especially good at getting in a tangled mess with earphones, radio lanyard, ticket, camera lanyards and rucksack straps. If not it needs to be as small as possible and powerful enough to pick up Radio Le Mans around the track without having to constantly re-tune.

Failing that, this stylish chap I saw a couple of years ago may just have the answer!

Thanks in advance!!

Have you considered radio ear defenders? Looking at them myself but have no idea which ones are any good...

I have been considering those but always felt a bit worried that I would look like a knob. If they work though, they may just be worth it. No idea which ones to get though.

I've used peltor radio/ear defenders for years now. Do I look like a knob with them. Who knows? More importantly, do I care!

What it does give me though is brilliant reception that I can actually hear. Also with the set I have, you can adjust the volume of radio and ambient noise separately. So I can still have conversations or listen to the general sounds whilst still having hearing protection. And when I want a bit of peace and quiet I turn ambient off for the full quiet mode.

I'd not go to Le Mans without them now.

I just got for Christmas a sportsdab 2 radio it has a speaker on the front, plays DAB radio and FM, Downside is a rechargable battery with does last 12 hours. I can be charged off the car though.

This is for Le Mans etc but as you can guess not used it yet!

Thanks for the info.

DS240, could you tell me what model you have please? I'm beginning to go towards ear defender types.

Out of interest, are there any good wireless headphones that have an FM radio in them? If I can use them for things other than racing, such as watching TV, I may be able to justify spending a little more.

I have the 3M Peltor Alert. I think sometimes their branded as 'racetunes' or 'worktunes'.

The peltor site has all the different versions.

You can get ones without the active-hearing and either analogue or digital receivers.

I'd personally favour the analogue with a manual tuner to easily pick out the radio Le Mans coverage.

I really can't praise them enough. No more wires and comfortable to wear.

On my first trip to LM in 1996 I realise I needed a radio in future. Since 1997 I've used what is now an old Aiwa pocket radio plus wired Sony headphones. This combination works very well for me.

The Aiwa runs on two AA batteries and lasts 3-4 LM trips! It's analogue and I've heard that DAB is not very successful at LM.

Thanks to DS250's recommendation re the Peltor item. I've been considering these for a while as they are up to date and more compact than my set up.

The DAB option is more for cricket when I am not at home.

Best I could find on the web for my model was $133 or roughly £79.

I originally got mine used off eBay a little cheaper, but I'd definitely pay that price for them when with normal care they should last many years. Mine are 3-4 years old now, just come out the drawer for Le Mans though.

I have one of these which is superb. It replaced a Sony Sport radio which was stolen along with my camera at the Indy 500 last year (partly my drunken fault!). The Sony was also superb all around the circuit at Le Mans.

My rule is always buy good quality and it will last plus work properly.

Rechargeable radios are a bad idea though. Stick to replaceable batteries as you never know when it will need more energy!

Of course there are cheaper options and personal preferences.

Peltor headsets with just a radio and no active noise cancelling etc are around £40 for a similar solution.

I had one of these versions before my current ones and they are great. My dad now has them for LM.

But for no wires, no messing around with ear buds below ear defenders and wires getting pulled out when you stand up, I don't think you can beat the peltors (or other similar products).

How do you find the digital tuning on that Roberts around the circuit at LM, does it hold the station well? I have an old Sony pocket radio with a manual/analogue tuning dial – its quite annoying as moving the dial 0.0001mm in either direction loses the Radio LM signal… the upside is in areas of dodgy reception it can be moved 0.0001mm and still get a signal. Maybe its better than digital in that regard?

I've got RaceTunes, analogue headset and also a DAB/FM personal radio, Phillips. Which I thought was good to cover all bases - RLM and 5Live smile

I sometimes use a combination of both, as the RaceTunes ones don't always pick up clearly or are easy to retune and then you lose RLM. There's also the added issue of wearing the cans, you can't have a conversation with someone at the same time.

Cover all bases! smile

no issues with locking into a frequency you can lock the setting on these.the ear phones could be better ive replaced mine with sony items . the other plus is you can use it all year ,where you looks a tad strange walking the dog in peltors .

I bought Peltor worktunes from the States. Much cheaper than in the UK.
