Sorry, you're saying that 24 appearances for a club, including 20 starts and not notching up one win, not being regarded as an important player to the squad and worse still being called a 'curse' ISN'T a disastrous start? His first few matches were very promising and then he st spiralled and then got injured. Townsend could be said to have done pretty similarly. Some great performances but generally underwhelming and then injured despite displaying obvious talent.
It's so easy to say 'oh Bale was just unlucky/misused' now he's one of the best players in the world. But when he was just starting out for Spurs, the general consensus was a LONG way from thinking he was going to get where he is today.
Robbie I was there for pretty much all his games I promise you it was blatantly obvious from minute one that we had a star on our hands. It's so easy to say 'oh Bale was just unlucky/misused' now he's one of the best players in the world. To compare him and Townsend is ridiculous imo.
I'm not comparing Bale and Townsend as players, I'm comparing the treatment of them. I clearly remember being at WHL and the Bill Nich and hearing people groaning and moaning that Bale was starting. This was when Bale wasn't always looking like a worldy and articles like this and this were in the media all the time. If 'Arry had binned him off we'd have missed out. Townsend is young and has the ability and pace to beat players so I'd rather we cultivate it than sell him - that's all I'm saying. As someone else said, I'd rather we sell Lennon who seems comfortable in mediocrity these days.
Perhaps you just have an eye for deciphering the promising players that plateau early from the future world beaters.

I wasn't there for all, but I saw a number of his early games and he looked a lot like many young quick players: could be something special. However, it was overshadowed by the 'curse' and apart from his first few games, he was under-performing.

That's my exact point, the media created a bandwagon which many jumped on but it just wasn't true, look at your recollection regarding his first few games whilst I don't doubt you believed it they simply weren't correct. Put it this way in his first four games at spurs bale scored more goals an had more assists than Townsend has had in his entire spurs career, against better opposition and at five years younger.

I'm not saying Townsend is as good as Bale, I'm saying he's young and needs work. He has a lot of talent but he makes more decisions at the moment.
Anyway, I'll leave it there as it really doesn't matter and we've got more important things to focus on, like winding up the Scousers.
This could go on and on

Interesting players we're getting onto the books, they're all able to play more than one position (Verts, Capoue, the punchy Argentinian (Fazio), this guy who we've just signed (Stambouli) and of course..Dier). Think its very smart in that we should (in theory) have cover for most of our more defensive positions - hope it's not a case of jack of all, master of none though...juice said:

Starting to think this is another Levy masterstroke in appointing Pochettino.

Agreed, best manager you've had for some time. Problem is If he does do well then it'll be a struggle to hold onto him. History suggests he's not a loyal chap.Edited by Black can man on Saturday 30th August 05:57

What am I thinking, he'll be gone before the end of the season.

The flip side is would you prefer this or the red side of North London? The stats of 18 managers or so over the Wengers tenure is always touted but as much as I admired the Arsenal of years of Henry/Bergkamp etc, it would seem that Wenger has lost the plot slightly recently with his tactics on and off the field etc. Considering the stability and money spent, they should be doing better!
I could be miles off base here but is there a chance that Levy and Co have been tucking money away for the stadium over the last 5 years or so?
The reason I say this is that when you look at Net spend of transfers there has been next to no investment. Yes gross spend is somewhat important but if you look at the investment from the club it's on the NET side. Here's the figures
09/10 = - 1 mil
10/11 = + 17.5 mil
11/12 = - 27 mil
12/13 = - 1.3 mil
13/14 = - 9.8 mil
14/15 = -0.75 mil
I'm probably miles off base but just a theory I thought I'd throw out there.

That has to be the explanation because the alternative is that they are pocketing the money themselves....The reason I say this is that when you look at Net spend of transfers there has been next to no investment.
