Well, after 7 years in the garage, I decided a few weeks ago to get my 205 1.9 GTi back on the road, after the rear beam failed an MOT. I ordered a refurbed unit from SSP Engineering, and it went on a lot easier than I anticipated yesterday.

My only query is the central clamp that fixes the beam to the body. On the old beam, it clamped tightly around the main beam tube, whilst on the new unit, it is very loose - I don't remember taking of a bush or spacer, so are there two different diameter beams?

The car is an hour away from me, so I can't just nip round to check, so thought I'd ask on here.

Thanks all,

Tom

I had that problem years ago with my 205 1.9 gti there are 2 axel tubes avalable ,not sure why the colour should give it away to what youve got, back then i got my peugeot dealer to change it but as youve got a refurbed one the colour might not be right so give it back and get one that fits the strap......

that's the problem with so called 'specialist' companys

you don't always get like 4 like exchange

as said, they have supplied you an axle with a lesser spec 205 tube.

now if you had come to me, i would of supplied DIRECT replacement, and maybe even BRAND NEW GENUINE crosstube

Thanks both,
I did do my homework before ordering, and SSP seemed to come up on a few forums with having a good reputation.
I've got to say the service was very good, but the advice to put a bit of inner tube to take up the slack, I wasn't so impressed with.
would you suggest returning he beam and getting the correct one (with the larger dia. Main tube)?
The axle pic you out up jord looks very smart, and I'd have had one of those if I had known.

i'm quite well known on a few sites, especially peugeot forums.

i don't really advertise elsewhere. it's usally word of mouth and a good reputation that fetches customers to me.

i'm not sure what sort of warranty SSP offer (if any)? but you could ask if they will give you a proper size tube

I`ve used SSP axles a number of times,£420 inc VAT AND delivery. They are OK but nothing like Jords.
SSP are just bare tubes and radius arms,no mountings, brackets, hubs & stub axles. You have to transfer the lot over,or buy new ones.
I would say Jords axles are far superior,(I`ve seen the 309GTi you restored Jord).

theres nothing wrong with the smaller tube on the 1988 car as they must have fitted both but you try to find a smaller strap these days ,it would save you a lot of work thou.......

Hi jord294, just looking at your pic of the Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI rear beam, is that something you can supply ?
As i have just bought my car that has been lowered and would like to return it to standard height but most of the rear beam is in a very tired state frown
So if can supply a refurbed rear beam could you let me know the cost ?
Thanks Simon

get your self a workshop manual for the 205 its dead simple to ajust the ride hight and rebuild the rear axel. The hardest part is removing it from the car.....

Hi Jord294,

I have recently dug my 1.9 gti out of the garage with a view to doing a rear end rebuild (including a refurbed rear beam) just like your ones.

Are you still doing these beams? If so id be very interested.

Cheers

Dave

That looks great. Do you do 106 rear axles as well as the 205/309 ones?

You'll have to be quick mate, if you want one of my axles, as a friend of mine is interested in buying all my axle stock.

All I have left is brand new tubes so rebuilt axles will be all black with red torsion bars

If you'd like a chat I can supply a phone number

don't do 106 or 206 purely as cost involved is more, and most people can't justify the cost

sorry

I've just chucked my 106 at a garage to have a new axle plus a SPAX coilovers kit fitted.

The lad was saying he's not sure how he could lower the rear, as it takes a special tool to do the job.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for having the back lowered?
