Hi

my steering wheel has been getting progressively more off straight. Change to summer tyres did not help and the car then started to get unstable over bumps at high speed.

I borrowed another Lotus for a day and that convinced me there was something amiss with my Evora.

I tried to find somewhere to get the suspension setup. With the modern IR kit now available car setup is certainly easier to do, but my normal trusted tyre centre did not have the date file for the Evora. They did recommend the local quickfit. I must admit I was worried but talking to them they seemed to know what they are talking about. I used to be a race engineer in a previous life so I do know how to setup a car so I figured how wrong could they get it, I would give them a go. So half a day later I collected the Evora with new setup sheet with loads of green boxes on it. The main problems on my car were rear toe, but most of the settings were a small amount out. The job they did was first rate. The steering is now straight and the balance both left to right is much much better as is the stability over the bumps.

So moral of the story is if you car handling is not quite as you would like it don't think you have to travel miles to get the car setup. A local tyre centre with the right kit and a competent mechanic can do the job.

Good post. Took my SAAB to them and their computer showed all but one setting was out! Needless to say it handled a st load better afterwars! Their kit looked v.impressive. They hooked the car up and a screen in the waiting room showed which settings were out and which were fine.

I thought my Evora ones might have been slightly out (although no physical evidence of this) but on high speed braking on bumpy roads the car tramlined and was quite a struggle on occassion. Lotus themselves tweaked it and it seems fine now. With all the bumps in the roads its easy to knock the geo out.

My front end was not too bad (but some a little out of tolerance). The rear was far too much toe in which I think was giving the instability at speed over the bumps.

What gave me some confidence was the car was put on the machine on two seperate days, the first to check and the second to change the setup, and both times the machine gave exactly the same reading so repeatability is good.

What you do have to do is let the car cool down before setting the rear as the heat expansion around the rear end makes a difference. The guy who sits next to me at work used to be at Lotus and he believes that Lotus set the cars up cold, if anyone knows better then please let me know.

ps if you want to get really anal and set corner weights then obviously you are back to a specialist.
