I currently have an unhealthy urge to buy a caravan! Budget is around £500 ideally for a 2 berth.

I have somewhere to keep it at no cost and a towbar on my van so I am ready to go!

Is it do-able? Would you advise it?

I have been scouring eBay and Gumtree and there are loads of vans for up to £1000. There is a very nice Elddis at £1100 but it is just a bit steep for me at the minute.

I have a tent and camping gear from when I go away with friends on driving trips in my Boxster but I can't help but think for minimal outlay it would be nice to have something a bit more luxurious for when I am not on a driving trip and want to have a chilled few days away somewhere, especially if it is slightly out of season.

Any advice, encouragement or comments appreciated!

Cheers

Wrong time of year really, almost anything will fetch a bag in the spring time.

I work for a caravan dealer, we have a trade section where we sell off p.x's cheaply with declared known issues, we've got a van coming in tomorrow thats written back to its £100 trade value its going up for £1000 and the chap who runs the trade section has a long list of people who want it already!

Buy privately off of gumtree or ebay,be very quick and just grab anything thats not totally wrotten and with kit that generally works and you might get something nearer to £500 than a grand.

Are you using the Boxster to tow the caravan?? smile

14 years ago we bought a caravan for £250. Can't even remember the make/ model - I have some photos somewhere..... But we lived in it for 10 weeks and then sold for £250. Everything worked in it but it was small and basic.

We found ours in the local rag - but nowadays the net is probably the best place. You may find something advertised in a supermarket/ local shop that maybe a bargain..

Best of luck........

Our caravan which is a 5 berth cost us £450 3 or 4 years ago. We had taken the tent to a campsite near Lymington and the caravan was onsite with a note saying for sale, enquire at reception. My wife bleated she wanted a caravan, and in the end I sent her to ask about it on the basis it would be too expensive. So when she came back saying its £500 or near offer I knew I was doomed!

Anyway its watertight served us for several years and we'll look to sell it next year probably for more than we paid for it!

So bargains are around!

I bought all of this, including awning which was a year old, floor for awning, all water rolls, water pump, all cutlery, plates, 2 gas bottles, everything you could think of for £600. Even the TV aerial with mast and holder. I put my own telly in because it was better.

Well... I've got a no frills 2 berth Compass Omega (love caravan names) that's 30ish years old for sale as we've upgraded. It got all the original buyers receipts and is dry and solid.
There's only cold running water and a porta potti that are the downsides.
But its done us well for a year and a bit travelling to different shows and weekends away around the country.
The awning doubles the size of the caravan and have had no problem hosting 16 people on rainy windy nights.

It'd be great for someone who wants a bed for a few nights while they're away racing or MTBing far from home as all you'd need is a couple of sleeping bags and a few plates.
I'd want 600 but could be persuaded to take a bit less.

Of course I wouldn't think of using the thread to sell it but maybe you could find something like this around your price.

Scary - you have pretty much the same outfit as me.

We have a 1990 Swift Corvette and I have just replaced my mondeo with a 2001 Volvo V70 in silver......

What engine in the Volvo? Mine is the 2.4 petrol (140bhp) wondering how it will tow...
