Hi all,

So continuing from the thread from the other day,

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

, I have today inspected three cars one of which I bought.

It's not a Honda Civic, it's not a Mazda Xedos. So here's some clues as to what it is then, but I'm sure someone will spoil the fun within the first four posts!

- 1997
- Petrol
- 4WD
- Estate
- 2.0 four cylinder NA
- 100 bhp/ton

I paid 1400 EUR which I am well chuffed with.

Have a guess smile

So as previously mentionned ^^ it's a 1997 Subaru Impreza GL Wagon 2.0 NA, with 100k miles on the clock, two owners, FSH (!), summer and winter wheels, very good condition. Needs some TLC and a very good clean, but we'll get there.

Now the bad parts:

Bit of paint stuff, and that's the only rust on it - I checked behind the arch lining and it's still just on the surface, so I'll tackle that before the winter.

Engine is rock solid, loses no oil, clutch and transmission are fine, LOW-gearing works great (I don't know how to say this in English - the lever that you pull to make it offroad like a badass).

Also got a trailer hitch smile

Has a sports exhaust back box which is still easy on the ears and the gold rims which are the only mods, so plans are to keep it that way, maybe get some cheap GT Turbo seats, mudflaps and enjoy it!!

Picking it up next week and looking forward to doing some serious shedding.

I thought that the NA Imprezas didn't have a bonnet scoop (unless someone has put a turbo bonnet on of course)

lexusboy well spotted, thought the same thing and can confirm previous owner fitted a turbo bonnet.

There's no sign of previous accident damage (a few scrapes as seen on the photos, nothing that would warrant a bonnet change), so can only imagine the previous owner fitted it due to looks. If I can find a cheap standard bonnet I might replace it and sell the turbo bonnet.

The gold rims are from the Turbo as well I think.

The duckspoiler is not original either is it ?

I'll get the car Thursday probably, I'll keep this thread updated though.

Looking for mudflaps currently.

A friend suggested a spare wheel on the roof, a winch, heavy duty tyres, full on Sahara look... hate to admit that I love the idea.

This is going to be hard to keep standard isn't it?

Hey Russ,

I did biggrin at Paul Feller's place.

Heard only good things about him and the car was tip top so had no second thoughts taking it off his hands!

Kiflom,

Big update for the Sub, I've had it for a week today and it's covered its first 1000km in my care faultlessly. Have already replaced the wipers and the light bulbs for some 3200K ones as the original ones were as helpful as a candle in the mines of Moria.

Before today's roundtrip to Zaventem (440km in comfort with just over 3/4s of a tank left) I calculated a fuel economy of 8.8L/100km for the last tank - very, very nice for a boxer.

Also spent 3 hours cleaning the interior and vacuuming all the previous owner's dog's hair out (futile as my dogs are now changing into their summer fur) and washed the outside with a high pressure washer; good enough for me.

When it all went quiet I drove to a nearby construction site and tried the AWD, which works greatly! Never once needed to use the low ratio gearbox.

Plans for now are to sort out some minor little things bit after bit (the dashboard light illuminating the speedo from 0kph to 110kph is broken, rear wiper doesn't work, sound proofing it a bit).

And the fleet together:

Bending space and time lol:

Also, could one of the mods please change the thread title to include make and model (Subaru Impreza Estate) I would be a very grateful bunny smile

Hi aspirated,

Not exactly common in estate form, and I reckon that the majority left on our road are GT Turbo's.

Bugeye, Blobeye and Hawkeye are much more common, unlike the hatchback.

Small update time.

Had the car booked for a geometry as it pulled sllllllightly to the left and now it's all tip top!

While it was on a ramp, I checked under the car and found it to be in very good condition bar some surface rust. The mechanic who did the geo said that he saw 2-year old German Premiums that looked worse.

After a service next week it'll be mechanically perfect so looking into doing some tidying of the bodywork over the coming weeks while I'm off of work.

Then I remembered I had an AWD car so drove into a forest to test it out - it performed admirably and the grip on wet grass and mud was impressive considering it's got summer tires on at the moment.

And a cheeky lil' pic of the Sub's reflection from within the car wink

And here's for all y'all who have never seen a naturally aspirated Impreza boxer engine. Turns out those things exist!

All standard too!

Small update, as I am in Germany where labour and parts are much cheaper than back home the Subaru was booked in for a big service last week and I got it back Friday afternoon with the the big 175000km service done for just the cost of parts in Luxembourg - I didn't even have to get my hands dirty or buy specialist tools.

At the same time I had the front dampers replaced as the right one was leaking badly and the left one was starting to as well - not good news for its MOT in November.

She's now running ever so smoothly and will hopefully give me many more thousands of km's of joy.

Just have to try the AWD in the rain now as I want to get her dirty.
