That's minging! Although to be fair if the bodywork is broadly as good as the under bonnet view suggests it might be possible to either find another complete interior or have that one retrimmed professionally to end up with something pretty decent? Probably best to think of it as a £10k car but that most of the money will be spent after purchase lol
You could probably buy a minter for £10k.

Best to think of it as a £2k Maser and smoke it to death / leave it ratty and give it basic servicing.

Doesn't exactly meet the 'best' criteria but about the lowest you can get into a running Maser for.

That is far more appealing than it should be.
Indeed. It also happens to be just the sort of car that I'd happily watch someone in this thread go out, buy and enjoy.

Any takers?
Can the human mind imagine the amount of bodily fluids secreted in this cabin over the years?

Someone must have had very leaky elbows to need the arm-rest re-trimming in black.
Great patina on the top of the dash.
I suspect that's where all the spittle landed each time the driver launched into a foul mouthed tirade when it broke down and left him on the side of the A1.

Me too. In actual fact, was worn down by resting a gun, trilby and cane on (for easy access) during frequent jaunts down to the Africa boat at Algeciras for business.

Exactly, it would cost £8k or so to retrim it. Suspect it might smell though.

I've actually taken that Ferry to Ceuta! Sadly not in a Maserati though, Citroen C1 from Malaga to Algeciras, foot passenger to Ceuta, walked across the border to Morocco, 1 hour taxi ride in an ancient and surely un-roadworthy W123 to Tangier, then collected Citroen C3 for 3 week road trip of Morocco smile

Almost snap though we were in Spain/Gib at the time and just went for the day.

Took the ferry as foot passenger to Tangier-Med, not realising there was a coach provided and took a W123 to town. It really is the point where East meets West with all sorts of old Mercs, Landcruisers and vans loaded up both ways.

Well at the moment we're actually looking for someone to take on the challenge!

Interesting reading Chris Harris' FF report today ref failing to complete 2 journeys in the 6 months he's had it. Off the top of my head, I can only think of 3 in 10 years of driving - including some fairly ropey stuff - two of which were running out of fuel and one was iirc the timing belt in a rental Transit. I even drove 200mi home in a car that I'd sideswiped an arcitc with in the rain on the outward leg, sans wing mirror.

I'm guessing your cars were from the colder european countries - those where it's too bloomin' cold to fail to proceed.
The italians and the french both do exactly the same non-committal shoulder shrug when challenged. As do their cars smile

Good morning from sunny Dubai!

For the UK barge appreciation club, a heads up that my old 1998 S600 (the W140 shape) is for sale on ebay - looks like the same bloke that I sold it to:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1998-MERCEDES-BENZ-600-S...

Rego is R586HVV if that helps. For some bizarre reason, he has listed it as a 600SEL (that is the designation used on the first generation of the W140's).

Asking price of £5950 is outside the range of this thread but given that I sold it to him in 2011 with less miles and for £3500, there is probably room to negotiate!

I spent a heap of money on it but cannot see how is worth that to be honest.

Anyways, perhaps useful intelligence for anyone considering taking the leap to bargedom!

Was this for sale a couple of years ago on a Merc owners club or similar? I remember a load of photos and info and a silver S600 and assume it is the same one.

If you are thinking of a hugely detailed advert with a ton of photos, then yes, that is (was) mine.

One of the photos that I took in the graveyard is framed on my desk :-)

Ideal! wink
I bought a car from Glasgow. (Unseen, natch). Threadist 0a - top man that he is - did the viewing for me.

Bound to be someone that would view if you asked.
I would offer but it wouldn't be for a couple of weeks as I'm on business in other parts of the UK from usual at the moment. Nothing better than having a poke around an old merc!

I must admit I don't particularly like the colour of that one, and it doesn't appear to have MOT. I suspect that some of the usual stuff (eg suspension bushes) will doing anyway - it is a 26 year old car after all.

Sounds like it's got your name on it! Get up there asap and get it viewed. As someone else said, all of them have some sort of issue at that age. The excitement will come back the moment you set eyes on it!

R129 comes with a hard top so it can barely even be described as a cabriolet. Probably. Possibly.

Noticably more refined with the top on (although prone to leaking).
