That's quite a cheap shot. I think you'll find the wood in the E65 is very real, and that there is plenty of plastic in the W124. Can't you just accept that for some people a W124 isn't the worlds best car? Glad I didn't buy one in the end, and cat220 who's owned both also said he didn't regret going from W124 to E65. It may not suit your car desires but doesn't mean it doesn't others, no need to get all high and mighty.
Sorry, just read this, I was just taking the pee, perhaps didn't come across that way. At the end of the day the fact my car has been in the garage being "renovated" (not "repaired" as I insist to friends) probably speaks volumes about classic vs modern...

The 140 was a contender for the best car in the world at the time. I miss mine now. Please change the subject.

Modern cars don't need renovating? hehe

To be fair though, I went on the W124 forums before looking at the other and they still have their faults, like all cars. E65s seem to carry some form of infamy for electrical gremlins but looking through the history the only one mine has had is that oil pressure sensor. That was the costly sum of £50, fitted including labour.

No worries chap smile

I'm not looking necessarily to spoil your Friday evening, but these two won't help! Quite different mileages; I prefer the grey moon-miles one myself.

But what did the top one go for when it went through the auction today?

The Onyx Grey S600 C140 (as lined to above) sold for £2k plus commission today at Poole auction. Looked well for its 229.000 miles. History was bob on, 22 stamps at MB, last one at 225.000 miles including all 12 plugs.

Jag XJS V12 Lynx convertible made £2900. JAYB on the other thread bought it I think.

Early beige W126 380 SEL made £1950 from memory and was very tidy.

Colour coded early R129 300 made something silly like £7k. Had only 55,000 miles.

Merc 190 2.5 Cosworth made circa £7k as well.

Mate of mine bought a nice little MGB which I got to drive home for him. Was a good day out in the sunshine.

Almost incredible. A bloody steal, accordingly. I sincerely hope it was you who bought it!

It was very tempting, but it had been delayed getting to the auction house a few times due to electrical gremlins, which made me think twice.

Amazingly tidy inside and out for the mileage though. Your neighbours would certainly think you'd had a payrise.

Am I right in thinking the Pagoda SL (W113) never had a 'banger' period, unlike the R107 and the current cheapness of the R129?

I certainly remember them seeming jolly expensive when I wanted one from afar back in the mid 1980s.

That bodged up seatbelt is a bit out of place.
One day I'll have the guts to go Jag V12...
You don't need to all that brave to run a Jag V12. The parts are cheap and the motor goes on forever if serviced properly. You are mainly just replacing suspension bushes as and when. Elephant in the room, of course = RUST, but if you get a good one they're reasonably easy to keep rust-free.
I think that's a bit pricy for its condition - the paint doesn't match up even on the photos. I suspect the paint isn't great in real life. I don’t think the colour helps its cause either. Jaguar called this colour ‘Oyster’. It is like a very pale metallic goldy-beige. It is nothing like so good a colour as Sovereign Gold – a really strong gold. That looks great to my eyes! Others may disagree!

I agree with deadslow; a six litre V12 Jag isn't a foolhardy choice and properly serviced XJ12s and Daimler Double Six's are not fragile, needy things which will ruin your life before bankrupting you.

V12s do need to be maintained properly though, since the coolant needs to be changed diligently as do the ignition components. V12s are not nigh-on unburstable like the six cylinder cars, but still pretty strong. There are several V12 Jags with huge mileages on xj40.com, for example. Strangely, the XJ12 seems to be a car whose earlier owners used them a lot, racking up the miles. Many are high mileage

The main problem with any XJ40 is rust. They're talented rusters.

These V12 Jags are much more appreciated on the continent, as all versions of the XJ40 seem to be. A significant percentage of them are being exported at the moment.

That's the way I remember it too - the Pagoda was always an expensive car. The R107 hardly dropped for a very long time too, with seventies cars still fairly expensive even in the mid-late eighties.

In 1991 I sold an immaculate (freshly re-sprayed) 150k 1979 350 SL for £9k and an immaculate 80k 1982 380 SL for £12.5k, if that info is of any use to anyone.

Just to add, at that time, someone I knew sold a very crusty, no history 1973 350 SL for £5k. It all makes these current 129s ridiculously cheap. They are damn fine cars.
