R129 at £45,000 : http://www.howardwisecars.co.uk/index.php/car-deta...
And yet somehow it just doesn't have the appeal of a £4k early 300SL.

But that's not an asking price: it's going for auction. It fetches what it fetches.

I was thinking that too. Depending on the reserve it might not sell at all. However, isn't there a tendency for these auction houses to set estimates deliberately seemingly low to stimulate interest? Hence things often selling for above estimates?

I don't know much about Coys but I keep a regular eye on Anglia Car Auctions and visit the classic sales once or twice a year.
http://www.angliacarauctions.co.uk/en/classic-auct...

Their pre-sale estimates compared with the subsequent sale prices seem admirably well judged and spin-free.

£8k could win you the odd battle, but, you would probably still lose the war.
I would beg to differ. Big Ben will throw some light on the subject when he pops in, but I don't think eight grand contingency on top of normal running costs is likely to leave you short. The suspension is the thing most likely to bite, but that's not just an SL 55 trait.
You rang?

I have had my 2002 SL 55 for two years now and it has not cost me that much. From I think total bills are:

- Xenon headlight ignition / control module £70 fitted DIY
- Tyres 2 x rear at £700 a pair, 2 x front at £400 a pair
- 'big' service (can't recall if that's A or B in Merc parlance) at a specialist £400 ish
- New supercharger drive belt and tensioner wheel £80 ish again DIY
- Few bits of boot trim / clips £5
- Speeding fine £600

So I suppose that makes it about £1500 a year if you exclude the obvious red herring. However if you are not a bit handy then I could imagine the headlight ignition would have been £500+ at a dealer as it was a bit of a pig of a job.

The previous owner of my car had spent thousands sorting the suspension, mainly on replacement struts. However he ultimately fitted the Arnot lifetime guaranteed units which have not given me any problems.

To the poster looking at a £12k SL 55 I would tread carefully, £14-15 seems to be the lower price everywhere else so there must be something wrong with it.

As for the 'Korean' interior I have not been in a non AMG version but am generally happy with the interior on mine, but I don't think the lesser cars have stuff like a full leather dash / headlining etc so may be a bit more plastic looking, certainly if they are like a W220 S then I see where you are coming from. The answer is don't buy a non AMG R230!

I will be selling mine soon due to a new venture that needs funds but have been putting it off as I love it.

Same for me, too. I quite fancy an early and bear bones 300 SL-24.

Slightly at a tangent to topic...

We were talking a few pages back about R129 values. Plagued by my usual insomnia, I came up with the idea of trying to find the most expensive R129 and R107 and Pagoda that I could find.

I think I've found them all in the one place: http://www.howardwisecars.co.uk/

R129 at £45,000 : http://www.howardwisecars.co.uk/index.php/car-deta...

R107 at £86,000: http://www.howardwisecars.co.uk/index.php/classic/...

Pagoda at £140,000: http://www.howardwisecars.co.uk/index.php/classic/...
Slight improvement on your R107 peak price. Brabus have one for £93,317.10 (converted by XE.com from €117,900.00)

Any reason for that engine specifically over a 500SL?

Only ask as I've had my interest piqued by an early 500.

I'm just back from taking the S124 to Kwik-Fit for an a/c re-gas. Madame CdeG threw her teddy right out the cot about the non-working aircon, so I thought I'd start with the simple checks first. The Kwik-Fit boys pumped all the gas stuff (or whatever it is they do) and then 30 mins later told me it wasn't working.

Good news = no charge, and confirmation of what I was pretty sure would be the case.
Bad news = need to either get the compressor and other bits and pieces replaced, or may have to move the car on and start again. As I really like the old bus, I may have to spend some cash.

Any recommendations for decent aircon places near Farnborough?
John Goggin at Aircare Automotive is really really good and mobile. Google him and see if he covers you.

Thanks for the tip. He does, but I'm trying a place I've found locally on Wed so I'll see how they do first.

I can kind of see it from both angles - I'd rather have one with sorted air suspension because that's the whole point, but rather somebody else picking up the bill for removing it. Don't think I see a mention of a cambelt change recently? Probably means it's due soon.

That interior trim is 'interesting' - not sure I'd want green cloth in something like that, mixed with the 'wood'. Easily sorted with a set of Recaros from an RS6 though

Well, I've already got a 500. I like the character of the DOHC six. Revs beyond 7,000rpm, only really begins to take off above 4,500rpm, looks good under the bonnet.

The 500 is the one to have. It was supercar fast in its day and is still quick today.

Edit: just read cmoose comments. I'd still say it is a very fast car. Acceleration from 60 to 120 is very strong and it keeps going hard well above that speed. It is a very easy car in which to cover a lot of ground in not very much time.
