I went to Carmarthen and back yesterday in a w140 S420. 800miles. 20mpg. Almost £300 of petrol. Two speeding tickets. A stiff neck. And total exhaustion. Not a great ad for barging.
I've done Carmarthen to Darlington in a day but never a return journey! What were you doing in my neck of the woods?

Years back I used to do Nottingham to Carmarthen (in my 1.6L Orion), pick up Mum's MG Maestro and head to Ashington (Northumberland) in a day, picking up grandparents to go to my Mum's place back in Carmarthen for Christmas the day after. After Christmas, round trip Carmarthen - Ashington - Carmarthen, pick up my crappy old Orion and back to Nottingham. All because my snobby grandmother wouldn't be seen in my crappy Orion.

I used to love it!

800 miles in a day? Christ that's some mileage! I love long trips, but it totally depends on the car. As said, almost 300 miles in a corsa wasn't that great, yet I've done 450 in the 745i and it was absolutely mega.

I've done 600 in a day in a 2.0 Merc 190e which was fine, but more power and less wind noise would have been much appreciated.

Lake District in 1 week today, 300 miles and yes, I'm taking my car! The return trip sees a big detour so 450 miles. I'm praying the traffic will be ok so I can stretch the V8s legs a bit. Leaving VERY early next Wednesday (about 4:30-5am) so I can get some good miles done before rush hour.

Well now focussed on my trip south on Sunday. All this talk of mpg, I've been getting 19.7mpg average about town in the xj8. I'm interested to see what I get from the e55 on the run back to Glasgow (all going well), I'd be happy with 25mpg. Took the plunge and placed an advert for the Jag. If only I could keep the two of them.
It may take longer to sell than the E65 did... Well, you've had to write an advert hehe

Do you remember your average mpg in the 745i, and how did it compare to the jag?

Oh, you know, spreading happiness and joy in the civil courts. I'm doing Northumberland to Swansea and back once a week at the moment and it's killing me, great big comfort barge or not. I've always liked a long journey in a nice car but much more than 500miles and ceases to be much fun. My record in a day is about 1,100miles and I once did 1,750miles in 42hours. Stuttgart to Northumberland at one sitting was fairly demanding, too.

I don't live very far from Ashington, about 7 or 8 miles north.

This is the thing, a modern diesel could have done 70mpg and cost about £90 in fuel.

The £210 could be spent on a massage, night in a hotel and dinner with wine!

Pushing for 400BHP and offering the equivalent of 38mpg, I'm fully erect at this.

Do you actually get fined if less than 10% over? Don't some speedos overreport ie suggest you're going faster than you are?

£300 of fuel at £1.30/litre works out at 16mpg....on an 800mile trip that can't be right, can it? Even when pressing on in the 745i on a long trip I still get a fair chunk over 20, it seems to get low 20's when cruising at 100.....which seems all too effortless.

I know, that was nice and straightforward (for both of us hopefully wink )

About town I was getting between 19/20 mpg, on decent run I've seen 28, on a run from Belfast to the south coast of Ireland I was getting 32 but I was driving like miss daisy. So slightly better than the Jag, especially on a run.

Economy is much better on more modern engines. My S500 used to get circa 20mpg day to day, my SL55 still gets this despite having 200 more BHP and 0.5 litres more displacement.

My best in a day is also 1100mls, Newbiggin to the Med.
Not that much fun, no matter what you drive.

Used two tanks then. 800 miles / ~40 gallons = ~20mpg. Sounds about right.

Was indeed very straightforward.... But I was slightly nervous spending, to me, so much on something unseen and knowing I had to get back later that night for work the next morning.... It was certainly a long day... Though not as long as R129sl's!

Interesting to hear the jag isn't as efficient. I do like that jag, as a daily, how do you rate it against the 745i? What about as an ownership proposition? I think the jag has that "something" the 745i is missing but I get the impression that in every measurable way (except perhaps comfort?) the 745i is better...?

That's some serious driving! How many stops did you take? I suppose doing 400 miles to get somewhere, then 400 miles back you'd probably only need 1 or 2 stops during each trip with that "break" between the trips? Good effort though R129sl, I'm just looking forward to giving the 745i a good couple of runs over the next couple of weeks. It doesn't do many short trips (commute 20 miles each way) but I don't do many long trips either which I class as over 100miles, but really only done 1 trip over 200 which was when I bought it in October last year now!
