I've tried to sort out my insurance for test driving (and likely driving home) the Jaguar for this weekend. What a fking carry on. My insurer (those with a ranking officer in the navy type name) have rubbished the idea. Speaking to the bloke on the phone, his first question was "does the other vehicle have a policy of insurance?". Answering honestly, and without knowing the truth but assuming this to be the case, I said "I believe so". He then said the only way I would be able to test drive it would be to get myself added as a named driver on the active policy, because vehicles can't have two policies active at the same time.

When I challenged him over this, his excuse was 'because it's not technically right' and could not be more specific than that. I then said "but surely, the owner's current policy would be dependent on him being the owner? If I buy it, he's then no longer the keeper and his policy would then cease, but I wouldn't be able to drive the car home". The bloke flim-flammed me for a bit longer before I decided to stop paying my own money to argue with this idiot.

I hope that this has not thrown a terminal spanner in the works. I'm already in for a £25 train ticket! It also is frankly annoying when you ring up expecting customer service and get broken English from the speaker on the other end. Again, adding to my phone bill because the speaker is hard to understand and needs to stop and think about what he is saying. Extremely unimpressive service and potentially dissatisfying enough to see an end to several years of insuring with these cowboys.
I (possibly wrongly) insured the car as the 'registered' keeper, so that when I bought it I was insured to drive home, the question they ask is 'will you be the registered keeper? yes i WILL be. Test drive wise I've always been under the impression that i'd be covered by my policy to drive any car that is covered by another policy. granted its only 3rd party.

Cat, any more thoughts/pictures on the E55?

Chaps, bit on an issue on the W124. On several occasions over the last week I have pressed the rear headrest button and the headrests have stayed resolutely erect. Pressing again did not cure the malfunction. Giving the button a push on a later trip resulted in them flopping down as desired. Is there a fix for such intermittent performance?
I hada a similar sounding issue with the drivers window on the R129. Annoyed me for months. Intermittent fault solved by changing the switch. £20 on Ebay and half an hours work.
The switches used on 70's - 80's Mercs are fairly user servicable so you may not even need to spend £20 for a fix.

Currently high bidder on this project... What was I thinking of?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-W124-e-class-se...

Edit: probably should be going for this but it doesn't have the same allure, especially with that hideous pretzel-look steering wheel.

There's nothing wrong with buying more w124s. I was considering buying another H plate 300e the other week. Just like mine, including rust, but in another colour. I have no idea why I would need it, but I wanted to acquire it.

I reckon a grand would get it very serviceable; another £500 to sort out the bodywork on a cash basis with cheap wings. These are my workings so far:

Full set of service parts and fluids, £100
4 Sachs shocks, £200
Febi shock top mounts, £50
Pagid discs and pads all round, £115
Lemforder engine mounts, £65
Wheels (not really required), £300
Tyres, £200

I could do all that DIY. Then there's rear subframe mounts, £150 fitted, steering links and bushes, £150 fitted. A pair of aftermarket wings is only £90.

Everything else is secondary.

Hmmm. Dare I mention this to my wife?

Why bother her? It's not like it's a change of direction or strategy that would (probably) require senior level sign-off.

Still loving it, will be happier when I get a chance to give it a good wash. Been snowed under at work this week so it's still filthy. Will get some decent pics up then. smile

I suggest when you do, you tell her you're sorting it to replace her golf so that you have a position you can reluctantly retreat to in keeping it to make good and sell for profit (or maybe never get round to the selling part).

I see this smart S500 is back. Wonder what happened. The vendor is a trader. Do you think that is his house or do you think he just drives round there and takes his pictures to lend credence to his ads?!

You'd be pretty pissed off if that was your house and he kept on coming around, sticking cars in front of it and taking photos!

I suspect its probably not his but that's just a guess.

No feedback seems to have been left for the other time it was on. I wonder what happened.

What could possibly go wrong here? hehe

Bentley Mulsanne 4dr 6.8
71000 miles
Good condition. Rare model - this is the Mulsanne Turbo; less than 500 were ever made. I've owned the vehicle for the past 5 years. Lots of service hostory. Mechanically good, but could do with some attention to paintwork now. Ideal wedding hire vehicle. Been maintained/serviced by local specialist Bentley mechanic. Long MOT and road tax. Cheap classic car insurance. Number plate MJI 1668 included with sale (worth about £1000 on its own). Viewings welcome for serious parties. Please call me for further details., SILVER, £3,999

Must be his house, last time round there were multiple other cars shown in the same location, otherwise as you say the owners would get pretty pissed off, unless they are at work so are oblivious.

It went for quite strong money last time didn't it?

I've looked at a few at that sort of money recently.

That one looks pretty good from the pics, the interior is better than most cheap ones. Wood is starting to go though, but not awful.

I really, really, would not want to look beneath the chrome arch trims though.

Still high bidder. Vendor sounds OK. Insurance £129 per annum. Wife didn't say "no".

Didn't say "yes" either. Although it was down the 'phone I suspect there was a silent sigh, raised eyes and eyebrows, and much head shaking. But, you know, she sent me out to buy some shampoo and conditioner earlier in the week and it cost £90, which is almost the cost of a year's insurance.

Might make a cheeky offer.

OMG !!! Your defensive arsenal is full of nukes then! You have nothing to worry about.

At the slightest hint or mere suggestion from Mrs r129SL that you shouldn't be wasting money buying this Merc tell her Mrs Derin100 has to make do with Sainsbury's Value Baby Shampoo and Conditioner that Mr Derin100 bought a good while back (in bulk) when it was on special offer at 9p/bottle...IIRC. Anyway it certainly wasn't more than 16p/bottle, as I certainly wouldn't have bought it at a rip-off price of any more than that. I would have just left it.

The car may be good, the advert is terrible.
