Two little features I forgot to mention earlier, but that I love; the single windscreen wiper and the fuel filler cap. The windscreep wiper is a really neat setup. I know Mercedes popularised it on road cars after it was used on the old Le Mans racers. Really neat to see it in operation, especially since the windscreen sort of wraps around the cockpit. Did I mention the windscreen was heated? The fuel filler cap is also mounted on top of the car on the rear wing. I'll admit, my hand ached a bit as I held the pump there but it looked so cool I didn't mind. And unlike when I'm filling my motorbike up, I didn't have to keep looking into the tank to avoid overfilling it!
I'm really liking the sound of an XJ now... Autotrader and Ebay here I come.

I love the single wiper on my W124 (after I replaced the motor so it could still wipe with a headwind - I went through a period where it was struggling to wipe at all above 80!), the mechanism that moves it to cover a wider area of the screen is very satisfying!

Glad you're happy with the xj8, good meeting you and pleasure dealing with you today. There really should be a sub forum for car sales between people on this thread. I've now met Ross and Baryonyx and we are all very much on the same wavelength when it comes to cars! Happy days.
What car have you moved onto Cat after the XJ, out of interest?
I picked up an w210 e55 estate in London last Sunday. I need to consolidate, I've far too many cars, with the e55 we can use that as a family ( 2 kids and a dog) at the weekends and I'll enjoy driving it. So now have a good excuse to shift my ford galaxy. smile (which incidentally is a great family car, I just lose the will driving it at times)
Oops, I did of course read and comment on that! How does the e55 compare to the XJ? I've been looking at C43 videos on Youtube tonight - that merc V8 noise is something rather special!
Two very different beasts, the xj8 is a lovely car, the ride quality is first class, it has a certain feel that's difficult to explain. The 4.0 v8 is a great match to the car, happy to potter around town, handles very well for is size on b-roads and is the ideal cruiser with more than enough pace when required. The e55 is a bit of a thug in comparison, the ride quality is nowhere near as accomplished as the xj8, what it loses on that front it makes up for in sheer grunt. In my opinion even by today's standard it's a genuinely quick car, almost a week in and I'm still grinning at the pace and the noise. Considering getting rid of the secondary CATS. Seems well put together too, despite the common w210 issues this one seems a good one (touch wood) wink

Chris showed me down to the local Shell garage on the way out of the area, so I could fill up before hitting the roads (though he had kindly put some petrol in the tank in anticipation of the car selling). I was spared the indignity many sellers make you suffer, sweating out the trip to the petrol station against a fuel warning light! He led the way in the W210 E55, I followed in the XJ8. A rare sight anywhere, even moreso in 2014!
I've bought too many cars in the past and found myself playing that game so I don't like leaving people especially anyone I "know" on this thread in that situation!
You know, as we were driving to the petrol station I was thinking the same regards the xj8 and the e55 together, we really should've got a picture.

How about Jag S-Type R's? I know they don't have the classic XJ shape but wouldn't they give similar bang for buck?
Similar I guess, little pricier though for the 4.2?

How do you re-ginger E39 headlights, do you have to change the entire lens? tah!

Yup, but its easy, and your old lamps are worth more than the ginger ones, so it pays!

Are these such a terrible idea? S55 AMG http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/merc...

Air suspension and rust aside I think they're ok. I considered one but, for me, the XJR would trump it.

A twin turbo 600 though, then we can talk.
I'm interested in these AMG variants of the W220. If you can find a good one they seem like a lot of car for the money. As I understand it from my recently acquired book on the history of the S Class by James Taylor the S55 AMG was initially a N/A V8 but then with the facelift and changes sometime in 2002/2003 it switched to a supercharged V8 giving similar performance to the twin turbo S600. Tempting.

I would have chanced an S280/320 if I could have found a decent example. The V6 doesn't really go wrong and is simple to spanner - just leaves the rest of the car to worry about. Sod an AMG.

I was lead here by Pistonheads: http://newsroom.toyota.co.jp/en/detail/3821341/

I wish Mercedes would do the same with the 124.

A lot of want for that. Someone with the space and means could buy that and if the worst happens they could break it and not lose too much money I guess.

(Inb4 wrong fuel)

Any considered opinions on this? It'd probably last me forever, looks to be in nice order.

Is that what it's reaslitically worth though?

All of that for only £3K?

IMHO, definitely worth it!

Well, there's about 50 quids worth of t-cut and tyre shine on the car. No a/c is a major bummer. Mileage may be legit, may not, but its absolutely irrelevant on those. Its had some welding by the sound of it.

£2500 tops I would have thought. Sub 2k if niggles found. Its the estates which are sought after.

Lovely looking car, but as an aside, are the same-colour bumpers and cladding original? Quite like it either way: thinking of doing my s124 this way in the spring.

One thing to point out. As you say the windscreen is curved, that means that some replacement wiper blades don't follow the curvature and just hang straight at the end. I tried both Bosch and Trico before finding that a cheapo 'Rainy Day' one worked perfectly (Jag want about £20 for an OE replacement blade)

I took a chance on a very nearly bargain basement S320 in June - 6000 miles later and so far it's needed a water pump and a crank angle sensor. Returns around 35mpg on the motorway too. Not the fastest thing in the world but certainly adequate.

I do keep looking at the early AMG W220's though - if one comes up close enough I may well go for a look....
