isn't the sensible/cheaper option a set of wheels (and tyres) that fit " size tyres.
Of course, which is usually what happens, but the SWBs do look great on the original sport alloys. The alternatives are usually E38 16" Style 5s or 17" Style 5/BBS RC090 split rims which look a bit gash on an E32, leaving period ALPINA staggered 17s the only really viable option - but you'll pay as much again for a good set of those and the 10.5" wide rear tyres that go with them.

So, can you actually fit 'regular' tyres to the TRX alloys seen on mid to late 80s 6 and 7 series BMWs?
Sure. If you can get Imperial tyres to fit either a 15.35" (390mm Metric) 16.33" (415mm Metric) wheel...

t was indeed the phone I was going for, though it seems I'm a bit unique in this respect hehe there's something about it that screams top-spec exec to me, maybe it's a 90s kid thing. I haven't seen one in an E39 before so it appealed!

The gearbox is the only thing that worries me on that car, I'm not experienced with autos and have seen quite a few E39s with gearbox troubles. Cooling system doesn't worry me any more than on my E36 and E46, I'm used to that!

Seems a hell of a lot of car at the same money I paid for my E46 328i.
The phone is good, I had the exact same on my old E38 and it worked very well. Wouldn't say it's that special though.

10" for the E32 17" rears and 10.5" for the E31 18" rears. The E32's rear 17x10's offer nothing except bragging rights and hassle when trying to fit them to any E23/24/28/34 - they should be shod with the identical 265/40x17 tyres as the E24/34's 17x9.5's and they have exactly the same depth of visible dish as them the extra half-inch is on the inside of the wheel - and they won't fit E23/24/28/34 without spacers.

Part of the TRX technology was a double bead on both the tyre and wheel which supposedly meant that if they deflated they wouldn't pop off the rim.

So, no.

Quite so, my reply was meant to convey that, in a rather more facetious manner, hence the smiley.

I think people have tried fitting 15's and 16's to the TRX wheels but as the tyres have to be stretched they end up seating on the inner of the two bead sites and hence are inherently unsafe.....

Is it just me or on that Autotrader CL500 does the driver's door also look wonky?
And the seller mentions the TV...which is presumably useless since the digital switch?

I've seen this car in the flesh - the seller is being very open and honest and it is actually nowhere near as bad as he has made out. It is, as he states, one of only ten rhd Alpina B10 V8 Tourings and will happily chip away at the heels of any E39 M5 without any hassle at all. He has rather a nice stable of a B10 V8S Touring, E34 M5 Touring and an 850CSi so knows how to look after cars rather well.

What a st way of getting a car classed as a Cat D. That sounds like an ex-wife job.

This looks lovely... What are the downsides of a car that's on Vcar?

How fast / powerful are these, I know bugger all about Alpinas.

"Sufficient". Officially 347/354PS (340-347bhp) for the B10 4.6 with a similar amount of lb ft in each case, from memory. The V8 S has a 4.8l engine with 375 of each (400+ often claimed when tested on dynos here for unmodified ones).

Bear in mind many E39 M5s fall short of their official 400PS/394 bhp in reality (only S62 V8s destined for Z8 production go tmade to "blueprint" spec and made that as a minimum, using weight matched pairs of pistons across the banks etc), plus ALPINA's official outputs are historically quite conservative, they are more of a minimum output on the lowest grade fuel with the engine running in high ambien ttemperature and so on - deliberately understated to remain below BMW's factory offerings via a sort of gentleman's agreement between the firms.

ALPINAs have no 155mph limiter either, unlike factory BMWs, regular or M (165 for Ms in recent years, just to differentiate them from the top of the range diesels).

ALPINA Performance stats: http://www.thealpinaregister.com/stats

The chassis of them is not set to be as overtly sporty as an M car, more like a standard BMW with improved ride control and responsiveness seems to be the usual review. I've only driven a few and they do feel far like a BMW with the speed of an M car, but the comfort and refinement of a standard SE.

As such, they're very niche, UK production volumes are low, quite often single digit or barely double for some models. For instance there is just a single UK B5 V8 S Touring - and about a hundred buyers in queue for it, so the value will stay comfortably high for the present owner. Other more popular models tended to cost around the same or even a bit more than the equivalent ///M, but lower awareness in even the petrolhead community, let alone the wider public sees them depreciate more quickly, close to the level of the standard BMW model upon which they were based, a 540i in the case of the E39 B10 V8.

^^ Good review!

I'm about 6 weeks into B10 V8 ownership. In summary: very comfortable, loads of smooth easy low-down torque, deceptively quick, but needs a LSD to really make progress in the wet.

If only they made a V8 E39 with 350-400 horses, an LSD and maybe even a manual 'box for alittl emore control and precision, in the wet - or otherwise. hehe

The sight of a clean, unmolested E32 still does inexplicable things to me. Lovely.

Just needs another six cylinders.
