Is the steering wheel original? My 91 has a different one.
Yes, this is one of the early airbag types...
Mine has the mercedes star in shiney material at the centre, I'd always assumed it was the later cars that got rid of that. I guess I don't have an airbag then... better not crash!

It reads 'SRS Airbag' on the steering wheel if you have one, doesn't it?
Our old W124 did, I think.

Not all of them, but there's only 1 of the M5 I got which didn't have my shadow in (the sunlight made it hard to get any decent shots without glare!) or my ugly mugs reflection....

images have been scaled to 30% of original image to try and get them under the 2MB limit. If S3_Graham wants full res then just ask smile The original of the first image of the CLK was over 13MB!

The dark blue A8 3.7Q is a beauty, isn't it? A great winter smoker and, really, an iconic car. You could take it anywhere and not have to justify your choice.

The black s124 at w124.co.uk? I'd guess he'll be asking £9k but what he'd take is another matter altogether. Nick comes on here quite frequently and knows more about 124s than anyone.

The anthracite super-spec'd early 300E. We had it about a year ago, maybe two, when it was languishing at a dodgy used car lot in Newcastle. I went to view. It has everything option-wise. Like £20k of options on a £25k car. The wheels were wrong (off a 126, so stick out too much with the offset being too small) and still are. There were bits of surface rust here and there, absolutely nothing serious but not immaculate. It has leather, not MB-Tex. The steering wheel is correct: it is the early airbag type: that cost you the thick end of £2,000 in 1988. It stood unsold for at least year at £3k asking. I wonder what this vendor bought it for. Oh, and the speedo definitely didn't read 22k when I looked at it (but nor was it ridiculously high).

Oooh I say I do like that. Absurdly good value for money. 110k miles in that is a fair chunk of fuel.

Blimey - is that his ball-park? I can never be arsed to find out - POA just seems such an unutterably up-itself way to advertise anything.

I know he's a regular on the forums - you can't miss him, he always signs his posts!

As my S124 clicked over 220K I mused about what I'd replace it with once either the wings get too embarrassing or something terminal afflicts it. It came to me that I'd certainly buy another if I found a decent one, so there's clearly a loyal following, but at well-above thread budget I reckon there are lots of more modern and more sensible options to be had.

I think the 124 estate is one of the exceptions to the rule that you should buy the most expensive you can afford. They're all worn, even the posh ones, so you might as well start with a cheap banger and do it up than start with an expensive one and do it up. At least, that's how I justify it to myself.

You can argue either side to that argument. What if it's your daily driver? Do you fancy having it in the garage for days on end, get it back for a few weeks, then back in the garage again to get more work done? I totally understand why people would pay a lot for a very tidy example because it will save a lot of the hassle. Buy a cheap one and spend lots of money and time replacing body panels and getting them painted, or buying a minter which has had that bit done already?

If it's a car which isn't a daily driver, or you're happy to do most of the work yourself then the cheaper car is almost certainly going to be the better option. For a daily driver, for some people, it might not.

They may all be tired. The cheap will be more tired. Someone might want to spend a bit more and get one that's simply "a bit tired" and is certainly up for daily duties; and they don't want a crappy one that needs to spend ages in the garage to get up to standard.

I'm not saying either way is wrong, but I think neither is necessarily right either.

There's a silver 320 S124 near me (North Yorkshire) on eBay at the moment for £2.5.

It looks genuine and is an ex Avantgarde vehicle, but has awfully corroded wheels and surface rust on the wings and bodywork etc.

Great in silver, but hard to paint match without a full respray.

Me too, I suspect.

Looking around that E39 M5 had got me hankering for one! Bit out of my price range for now, mind.

Given the amount you end up spending on cars, why not buy an 'interesting' one for around 5k and spend what you would have spent on one anyway?!

Ross. We've met, and I know you're a youngster, so take this in the mentoring spirit in which it's meant ... Are you insane?

The dedicated barge-ist merely sees these tiny factors (not issues or problems) as the reason to buy more barges. By so doing, you offset the risks and down-sides.

There's a reason I have 3 cars older than 20!

Don't go putting ideas in my head! Plus, insurance and general consumables sound far more expensive than the 7.

Keep an eye out for a pre-facelift. There's a step-down in value from the facelifts but the majority already have the angel eyes etc. fitted anyway.

I'd suggest keeping an eye out here for a better chance of a decent one-

Insurance isn't that bad. I'm a shade over £500 at 25 with 5 years NCB. What are you for your 7?

Consumables, I will concede...

yes

O/T, I've just got an air chamber in my barn to avoid condensation this winter, thought some on here might be interested:

Brilliant silver is a doddle to match! I repaired the front wings and rear arches on my S124 and blew them in perfectly with aerosols from Halfordssmile

Thanks for the pics Ross, it was pretty filthy I'm afraid. Wanged it though a sainsburys carwash at about 11pm last night!

Do you have a link to the high res ones? I'm seriously tempted to de-badge it.... It already surprises people tbh, just looks like a 230K!

Ref M5, I'm still desperate for one. I'd swap the clk in a heartbeat. Don't think I'd get my £6k back though frown insurance on the clk was very nearly an issue for me. Apparently it's in the 'over 30's' category, and being 29 the guy had to speak to his manager ffs!! £600 a year with 11 years NCB!

Eta: forgot to say, your 745 looked great Ross!
