Apropos of nothing :cough: what mpg could one anticipate from a 745i in mixed use, but mainly local/town? Not sitting in queues of traffic as such, just pottering?
About town between 19-22mpg.

This sounds like it has potential for only £950 - 525 manual

ad said:
The car is finished in metallic granite silver with dechromed window trims and door handles. The BBS alloys (including the spare) are in really good condition while there is plenty of tread left in all the tyres. The interior is exceptionally clean grey cloth with BMW mats, and everything works apart from the sunroof which only tilts but doesn't slide. The car also features a new battery.

The bodywork is in exceptional condition for its age, with only a couple of stone chips on the bonnet and some very minor scuffs on the bumpers.

The car drives beautifully, with no nasty knocks, squeaks or unwelcome noises - exactly as BMW intended in fact. There is a folder crammed with history and thousands of pounds worth of invoices that comes with this car, and it passed its last MOT in July with no advisories.

Calling all e39 aficionados (Fox, I'm looking at you, you must have encountered this in over 200k miles).

Knackered headlight adjusters, how did you fix this without spending £800 on two new headlights? This would be much easier with halogen units but trying to find facelift xenon units with adjusters fixed is proving difficult.
Further to previous answers, the very late 2002 and 2003 cars can be a swine to get apart but it still can be done. I baked both mine open; the first took about an hour and a half, start to finish, the second about 30 mins. It's all out there on t'internet - print it off, arm yourself with the correct tools and new adjusters (I elected for aluminium) and have a go.

If popping light units in the oven still seems beyond you there are a few how-to-do's now that don't require their dis-assembly but you might need gynaecological type skills to follow them.

All this AMG chat, currently up the North west coast of Scotland with the e55 (w210) the roads are just fantastic, think I passed one car heading south to Ullapool, the 5.4 n/a is a total joy, makes a lovely noise when pushing on and provides mountains of torque across the rev range. Even fully loaded makes for very brisk overtaking.
The 55k in w211 form would seem a natural progression perhaps in a few years. The chap I bought the w210 from had bought a 55k, he did say he very rarely got to exploit the 476bhp, only been in one briefly and it was an absolute monster.
Lovely, get us some pictures - a great part of the world for driving. When I get my W124 back (I, er, lengthened the to do list with the garage, and will be away this weekend!) I will be back there. I'd like to try the 5.4 NA, I bet it's good fun.
I've taken loads, will post some when I get home next week. Sounds like your W124 will be well sorted with all this work you're doing! As for trying the 5.4, you're not too far from me. We could have a Scottish bargist meet smile

Where did you get the aluminium adjusters? I might just send them away to the chap on ebay, save faffing around and potentially making an arse of it.

I can't find out why the lights still adjust their height though if it's the adjusters that cause them to rattle about.

Can anyone recommend who would be worth a call to insure a '99 Jag XJR on classis cover? I used to use Footman James donkey's years ago.

Not sure if '99 is 'old enough' but try Classicline - I used them for my '93 E34 540i. http://www.classiclineinsurance.co.uk

Try Lynbrook if the others don't yield results.

w124 people are there any other small 'upgrades' or fixes I can get done before I get mine back - I have to wait for a couple of days for the tyres next week.

I can't find any mention of this anywhere; http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm?itemId=161449965483 though it was up as a BIN so I might have missed it. After my £350 740i failed I'm tempted to (up to) quadruple my spend and see if I can get this, with a bit tidying it appears it could be a keeper.
Just thought I'd update this, the car is now outside my house, picked it up earlier today and couldn't be more chuffed with it. Look out for it in a Reader's Cars thread near you soon!

Indeed. Really like the non-bling wheels on this one. Aircon too. Stereo would need to go.
