Can anyone recommend who would be worth a call to insure a '99 Jag XJR on classis cover? I used to use Footman James donkey's years ago.
Give Lancaster a try. They insured my 96 W140 for absolute peanuts.

I can't find any mention of this anywhere; http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm?itemId=161449965483 though it was up as a BIN so I might have missed it. After my £350 740i failed I'm tempted to (up to) quadruple my spend and see if I can get this, with a bit tidying it appears it could be a keeper.
Just thought I'd update this, the car is now outside my house, picked it up earlier today and couldn't be more chuffed with it. Look out for it in a Reader's Cars thread near you soon!r129sl said:
The engine should be fine with these two caveats. If a long time is left between services, you can get compression problems on the rearmost cylinders. I don't know why. And if the vacuum pump has not been changed, then it should be changed immediately (it is driven off the timing chain, at the front of the fuel pump and when it goes it takes the timing gear and fuel pump with it, the interval is 250,000miles).
Otherwise, it will be worn out but serviceable, by which I mean you can run it into the ground over the next 12 to 24months or steadily overhaul it and get indefinite use out of it. But it will be completely worn.
It has a/c but my hunch is it is the dealer-fit Diavia system.
I think I'd want a pukka 12 month MOT as well.
The rearmost two cylinders on these engines run a bit lean and the exhaust valve seats recede, I believe. This results in a loss of compression and the engine then feels very flat. If you open the oil filler at idle and there's a lot of breathing from the filler, this is an indicationOtherwise, it will be worn out but serviceable, by which I mean you can run it into the ground over the next 12 to 24months or steadily overhaul it and get indefinite use out of it. A top end rebuild sorts it all out. The sodium-filled exhaust valves are £40 each from Mercedes but you generally only need a couple. Add in a timing chain & tensioner, a few air pipe bits & bobs and it's a £1500 job
I've never heard of the bottom end of one of these failing. I have heard of one seizing, but that was at 270,000 miles
The diesels typically all need engine mounts, front prop doughnut & a few bushes to make them spot-on. Not expensive but it all adds up

w124 people are there any other small 'upgrades' or fixes I can get done before I get mine back - I have to wait for a couple of days for the tyres next week.
New/better speakers? Having said that, the BOSE system in the new M6 is absolutely amazing, by a country mile the best I've EVER heard in a car.
Any rough ideas on cost to upgrade the system to something half decent? Ideally, I don't want something that looks bling and out of place.

I will say though that the black grille and clear indicators look very wrong.

New/better speakers? My own barge updates:
124 Cabrio - new plastic trim around the gear selector fitted. Covers the gap between the box and the wooden trim. Makes a world of difference.
124 Estate - new plastic gear trim as above. Ugly after-market phone speaker removed. Tax disc holder gone.
500SL - tax disc off, and hard roof on.
All in all, a proper investment in 3 wonderful cars!
