Sure, they're not particularly beautiful and are rather bland, but then so is the Lexus LS saloon - and quite a lot of people on PH seem to love them.

I'm sure the convertible will share the virtues of the LS - and at least the metal folding roof is a slight talking point. The only thing I could think of to say about the LS is there isn't much to say about it! biggrin
I kind of like them. What puts me off is the contemporary reports (if i remember right?!) of a poor ride - a convertible Lexus needs to ride supremely well, surely?!

Barge bought

So today I flew to Edinburgh, met Sam, and after (electronically) exchanging a few pieces of silver, I drove away in his 745i.

So smooth. So fast. So luxurious.

Apart from the satnav freezing 5 miles from home, it behaved faultlessly for the whole 500 miles, and the computer claims a pleasing 27.5mpg.

Tomorrow I shall take it to the car wash, then photos to follow.
Excellent news, I'm gutted I didn't get to own it myself as every car I've looked at recently has been an utter hound.

Congratulations, and enjoy. Good to see it go to another PHer

If you have any questions about anything feel free to ask (or Sam, of course! hehe) I did have a prospective buyer contact me to check a few things smile

The E65 745i really is a good barge isn't it biggrin

Sick of looking at the ugly fker driving the car behind you picking their nose whilst you wait at the lights? Relief is only a button press away! It was also the ultimate snub before ditching a tailgater,
Excellent. My new barge has an electric blind and I'm now looking forward to using it.

Just be careful using it if it's cold out. On my S8 it won't operate below a set temperature (single digits but can't remember what!) but I've seen broken Beemer one on a friends M3 coupe that'd broken on one side. You may find it does the same and won't operate, but if it struggles then best to save it for the summer (or leave it up!)

Find mine handy in the dark if you're getting dazzled from behind (never got round to fitting an auto dimming rear view mirror I bought a couple of years ago!)

Was passing through Heathrow yesterday so temptation got the better of me and I went to see the E500 Estate that someone linked on here 12 days ago.

Bad bits first - it is sold by dodgy dealers in a less than illustrious part of town. It has no service history and one of the rear tyres is mismatched. The steering wheel really does look like it belongs in a Beirut taxi with 1,000,000 miles on it. It needs a service F+ in 1,550 miles

Good bits - the mileage of 50,000 miles is confirmed by the previous 7 MOTs. It really is a one owner car as the V5 confirms. It has the full toolkit, user manual, 7-G owner supplement and Command manual, and they all seemed to be absolutely box fresh. All the toys work, the Airmatic does not show any codes on the dash and it went up and down as it is supposed to be. Plenty of meat on the discs. The three matching Continental Conti 2 MO had about 5mm thread left. Interior, except the steering wheel, was absolutely mint. Not a single scuff or mark. Carpets nice and supple. Needs a good hover and the leather fed, but that's about it. Aircon works and so does the electric rear load cover and gate. Bodywork appears mint, no rust or dent or scratches.

Now then, do I chance it? Brain tells me to walk away - the "dealership" just looks well dodgy, and the lack of SH is somewhat off putting. Although, in theory I can chase MB for it?

On the other hand, the mileage seems genuine, and except for the steering wheel, the car feels right. And it is a lot cheaper than other E500s.

Lastly, what am I to do with the 540i Touring. It needs about £500 thrown at it - filters, oil, plugs, viscous fan clutch and a camshaft position sensor. But in the last 10,000 it had new Bilsteins fitted, new rear subframe bushes, other bits and bobs and everything still works at 134,000 miles. The interior is immaculate, while the outside is one of a 17 yrs old BMW. Still presentable, but the tailgate is beginning to rust and I may need to replace it sooner than later for the sake of appearance.

To tell the truth, I guess I never was truly in love with it, excellent car, but not amazing. Have had it for 5yrs, simply because it does the workhorse bit so well...

Decisions, decisions...

Congratulations - take into account the lower cost of petrol and that's the same economy as SpeckledJim's E280 diesel smile

What route did you take South?
Ha thanks! I suspect it'll drop slightly now I'm in London.

I came down the M6, a quick stop to see my dad in Cheshire, then down onto the M40.

It's been chucking it down here all day, so no trip to the car wash. Maybe next weekend.

Obligatory 'what could possibly...' in search of a cheap laugh, but don't let the look of the dealer put you off what sounds like a pretty decent car.

And, after all, you'll only regret what you don't do.

Go for it.

Comically awful supplementary photos, but looks decent enough for £4,375 if you like this sort of thing.

Ooft.

You'd have to really not want a Mercedes SL or Jaguar XK.
The problem is that £4.5K will only buy you a comparatively ancient SL or XK where as that shape of SC was made up until 2010 with very light cosmetic tweaks. For the poser about town stick on a private plate and most people will probably think its a couple of years out of warranty by a few years. Try that with a R129 SL or X100 XK and people will probably ask if its eligible for free tax tongue out.

I feel bad for the SC430. The only tangible issues really being a bit bland in a market sector that has always been a bit bland and being very, very ugly. Oh, and its a posh Toyota, meaning it never had a chance in the UK.
I'm not sure why there is so little enthusiasm for these.

"Gopping" - good word, not sure I've ever heard that before.

For fun I ran a quick search on the Dutch marketplace. Check out these prices. Ooof indeed... guess I'll have to save up a bit more silly

laugh I'm sure you'll get it fixed

I did tank after tank in my old A8 4.2 with the worst at 13.9 mpg, the new owner found a sensor thingie was broken and managed to get it up beyond 25!
no, that's what they return. 20-25 around town, 30-35 in mixed, 40-45 on a run. Personally I thought that was fine when I had mine.
