Sony Xperia Z3 Compact - Your Thoughts . . .

Just a quick bit of good news - I took my Z1 compact swimming a couple of weeks ago. Got some lovely photos but also somehow got water inside. Condensation inside the camera lenses, screen no longer rotating, overheating and battery drain - generally a very unhappy phone.
Sent it off to Sony expecting a "user error - you must not have closed the flaps properly" response but no; it was replaced without quibble and a shiny, good as new handset arrived this morning.
One very happy customer

As mentioned I suspect you have a duff handset, as the screen on mine is perfect, but before you send it back have a play around with the Display settings, making sure it isn't in Super Vivid mode as that seems to throw the colour balance off a bit. You can also adjust the White Balance from in there as well.
I've checked all the settings and they were off. I had messed about with the white balance settings to no avail. I'll give them a phone tomorrow to see about an exchange, pita as I'm going on holiday next week. Interesting review below, comparing the Z3C to the Iphone 6 and Galaxy Alpha. Whilst they don't pick a winner, the Z3 seems to do very well indeed.

Loving my full fat Z3, the screen and battery life are epic. Massive upgrade over the old Z imo.

Couldn't put up with the way the screen handles reds so have arranged for it to be returned. I was really disappointed with the camera as well, for something that's meant to be 20.7mp, the images are disappointing to say the least.
Might be a silly point, but I found the camera actually defaults to 8mp, if you go to manual mode you can select 20.7mp. Can't say I've had issues with the reds on mine though!Nardies said:

Given that it's a high end phone, I should hope the Z3/Z3C should keep receiving updates for at least a couple of years, otherwise I'll be severely disappointed. As much bad press as they get, Apple seem to be the best at not abandoning their old handsets. My iPhone 4S, now a 3 year old bit of kit just recently got iOS8.
My concern was also for updates which was the main reason I picked a Nexus last time. It does sound like Sony are pretty good with their higher end phones, rumours that Android 5 will be released for most of the Z series out since 2012 (same time as Nexus 4 which will also get 5): http://www.androidorigin.com/sony-xperia-z3-compac...This is now looking like a better upgrade than the Nexus 6 for me as I don't want a bigger phone, damn thread making me poor !
I upgraded my old HTC Desire HD to the Z3 2 weeks ago.
So far I'm generally very 'meh' about it.
The Z3 doesn't seem to be able to set up apps on the homepages. You can have widgets and shortcuts to apps, but the HTC could have an app 'open' on the homepages. Not a major thing, just feels less flexible.
Also the phone slides off everything and anything you put it on. I've had to order some silicon covers in the hope they will stop this.
The back glass has somehow managed to get a crack right across the middle of it, whether this was due to falling off the arm of the sofa, or whilst the phone has been in a back pocket I don't know. After 4 years with the HTC not picking up a mark I'm a bit annoyed at this.
More positively, the phone is nice and quick, although I can't say I've noticed it being any quicker than the HTC in anything I use the phone for. I'm not a heavy user of all the bells and whistles on a phone, I kinda use it as a phone mainly!
The video and camera are a step up on the HTC, no doubt there, I took some test snaps and video at the weekend and it is decent quality even on a 55" screen. But then the HTC had an issue with focus on the
left hand side of landscape picture so I'm happy with this improvement.
Some 'features' that attracted me to this phone are not worth bothering with, the ability to sync it with the Sony TV is a cool gimic, but seriously, after about 30 seconds it's just not something you would want/need to do in the real world. All it means is that you get what's on your phones screen about 100 times bigger in front of you... and laggy.
Anyways, I've got it now and it is small enough to carry around and powerful enough to be future proof. It'll have to do. Thankfully I'm saving £5 a month on this deal compared to the what I had before.

Well mine arrived today, and surprisingly so did the o2 sim card. Have used the sim swap page on their website, 3 hours later still waiting, anybody know how long it normally takes?
Phone seems pretty good though, noticeably quicker than my nexus 4, haven't really tried much else out, just been putting the apps I want onto it.

I'm impressed with my z3 compact. No issues so far and its much quicker than my previous nexus 4. Sound and video quality is a revelation. I used the camera for the first time yesterday, seems very easy to use and the background blur feature actually works. These were in auto mode so not the highest quality I don't think?

Auto mode is 8MP, whereas manual is 20.7/15MP, haven't seen a massive amount of difference though!Edited by drab on Monday 20th October 05:59
