I've been looking for almost exactly the same car, although one with a decent sized bout that isn't an estate and I've come to the conclusion that there isn't one

Have to say you've described a 130i to a T there. Golf R32 as well. I'm sure for £7k you could buy the best e46 330i going surely? if you want more space that is. I'd have thought for £7k you could get a new shape 2006+ probs with higher mileage though.

Lol...I know. They can be picked up for peanuts though and the savings can be spent on fuel.

I know, they seem an absolute bargain. I would actually love to buy one, but just read SO many horror stories on here! Also i'm guessing they will be virtually impossible to re-sale after say 6 months when I have got the ownership bug out of my system?!

Ive decided on a mk5 Golf gti. Doesnt sound fantastic, but not bad either. Its a little heavier than I would like but all modern cars are. Handles its weight very well though and is generally a very good all round package.

The one I drove was a bit ropey so the search continues.

Good choice - I loved my Mk.V. How much extra is an R32 Mk.V?? No faster really, but looked good.

R32s start at around 8.5k. Gtis start around 5.5k and for my budget of 7k begin to be in fairly good condition.

Good choice. I saw a dark blue one yesterday and thought how well it had aged. Very classy looking car.

I don't know where the "edition 30" versions are, price-wise, at the moment, but well worth a look. They offer extra oomph over the standard gti plus some nice styling tweaks. More engaging to drive than the R32 as well...

ETA: ah... forget the last bit... it seems ed30s start at about £10k.

Yes, good choice even if I do say so myself! The dark blue "Shadow blue" is quite rare though - most are red or black.

Edition 30s command a huge premium. You get a more powerful and more tuneable engine, but I think I prefer the more understated looks of the simple GTI (and the monza alloys).

Should get a very good condition average miler around 06 with some good options for £7k?

Have you considered an Octavia VRS? Same platform, same engine as the Golf. Very practical as a family car, massive boot usable rear seats. Not the most exciting thing in the world but if you are ok with the noise from a Golf this will also be ok. Lots of choice around your budget.

BMW E9x touring 330i, or maybe an Alpina D3 if you care about mpg more than power.

Well they are the ones on my radar right now with similar demands.

Not sure I'd want smaller as it just defeats the object of a conventional type car for being practical. 1 series for example is pretty small in the back/boot!

Hmmmmm

So of the 5 original criteria 4 have been ditched.

Chassis/ handling....not really
Noise..... Not at all
Driven wheels..... Nope
MPG..... That's the one
Power.... Nope

Those were the original 5 criteria in order of importance and you're going for a Mk5 Gti

Well, to some 200HP is a lot and if he gets it remapped apparently they're good for 240+.

+1. Love mine even though it is a second car. Driven much more expensive / sports cars and the ST220 remains a great drive.

The early 2006 models must have cost £24-25k back in their day. That is incredibly strong value retention for an 8 year old car.

Bugeye or Blobeye Impreza WRX STI would be the best for outright lunacy. A mapped GTI is probably just as fast though. Enjoy smile
