Although it's many moons ago now, and it's had a name change, I stayed at the, now, Affinia Manhatten hotel. It was pretty good back then and still looks ok. It's really central, on 7th Avenue near to Madison Square Garden. http://www.affinia.com/New-York-City-Hotel.aspx?na...

If you get a room near to the top you should get city views, although I'm not sure on prices for those. Or are you wanting a hotel that looks over to Manhatten so you get the full city view, such as in Brooklyn?

It's a bit out of the way, but I was in NYC over 8 nights for New Year's Eve, and we stayed in the downtown Marriott.

We had a room looking uptown, and the view was amazing, I'd recommend it anytime, just ask for a room on a higher floor with an uptown view.

Rooms were a lot bigger than anything we could find for a reasonable price around midtown.

Another Affinia, the Dumont is decent enough too. Most recently I've been staying at The Carlton which centrally located and reasonable value.

Oh, just remembered I'm hearing good things about The Nomad from colleagues.

Stayed here about 7 years ago - I would recommend it too.

The London is really good and where I tend to stay at, all of the rooms are suites, and size is an issue in NYC.

Also, the Carlyle is a great hotel, but may be a bit more expensive

still finding it difficult to choose! I've noticed lots of the prices are ex taxes and when you go through to buy them it creeps up to £450 a night!

This was the hotel we stayed in:

http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g60763-d...

Rates averaged out to £165.25 per night, from Dec 27th through to Jan 3rd.

Very close to the subway, which was around 15 mins on a local train up to Times Square.

We stayed in the Distrikt Hotel:

A stone's thrown from Times Square, not in the nicest area but the hotel was clean, quite contemporary and did the job, was relatively inexpensive by NYC standards too.

We stayed at a Holiday Inn, mainly cos the points paid the bill but it was OK, new hotel, nice roof bar and and sky line from the roof bar but never bothered about a view from the hotel as I did not intend staying in. Midtown West on 31st St. Couple of blocks from the empire state and close to all the stations to get you around. Not far from Keens as well.... yum.

Have stayed in the following:

Intercontinental Barclay- Great location - hotel was rubbish and over priced

Kitano - Great location - great large rooms especially for NY and had a good view of the Empire state building which looked great lit up at night.

Hilton Chelsea- Didnt like the hotel or the location - more for the hip crowd

The Westin (from what I remember I think it was 34th and 3rd) so reasonable location and I liked the rooms - A good balance of modern and stylish rooms.

Stayed at quite a few of the ones mentioned. I'd probably go for whatever you can get a deal on-Quickbook is a good site for getting deals in the US. Most are fully refundable so my advice would be to book something at a price you're happy with and periodically check for deals. I forget the name of the place we stayed quite far up the north end of Manhattan-that had nice views. Soho, Greenwich etc have more of a neighbourhood feel than downtown etc which most of the ones mentioned hear to my mind are located.

The Affinia Dumont has a cracking few if you get a high floor, Hotel Giraffe also very nice with a roof top bar. Belvedere just off time square we got a very good deal on and the room was nice.

Allot of people assume Times Square is the centre, it's not a bad location but very touristy, it's obviously a working city so you're not going to be close to everything wherever you stay but the subway is very good.

View from the Affinia-rooms were huge also.

We stayed at the Hilton on 37th ? Street. Right near the empire state building, just off broadway. That was around £235 a night for 4 of us in 1 room, pretty good value I thought for a central location.

Another for the Distrikt Hotel. I go over quite a bit on business and get put up in quite a few different hotels and this is one of the best. as said not in the greatest location next to the PABT but very good quality rooms for NYC and very quite as there are only I think 4 or 6 rooms per floor.

You can get an amazing apartment in Manhattan for your budget. Loads of choice and some really interesting ones to choose from.

A word of warning over rentals-check if they legal as they're usually not and there are plenty of stories of holiday makers handing over cash and turning up to an non existent address. Just go on the NYC section of Trip Advisor and type in 'rentals' on a forum search and you'll get the picture.

Space is tight so I think it's a law to prevent those who need to live and work in the area getting pushed out by holiday let investors.

With Airbnb the vendor doesn't get the money until after you arrive and check-in at their place. You should still check the reviews carefully, but that goes for any hotel too.
