I managed to spec an S3 saloon to £43k at lunchtime! I wonder if any will roll of the production line with a spec list that long.....

Has anyone seriously looked at these? It's reviewed in Autocar this week against a Porsche Cayman (why?!), BMW M235i and a Merc A45AMG. Once you've excluded the Porsche as an irrelevant comparison to most potential customers the S3 sits in the middle of the 3, which is probably what most people would expect from Autocar.

What really jumped out at me on the configurator is just how dull the choice of colours is! From memory there are 3 different choices of black, a 'fetching' brown option, flat red, or Monsoon Grey which is what I would choose.

Which one wins, BMW or Merc?

Looked at them a month or so back - very pricey once spec'd up nicely (I was probably looking at £40k or just over). I leased a Golf R instead. Nice looking cars, but silly money once you get going.

I've got the Sportback version for work at the moment;

I know the basic price is just over £31k, got in it, thought there are a few extras in here, looked at the spec sheet; £39.5k! I'm sure you could easily get it higher too.

Absolutely - the sportback is about £3k cheaper than the saloon too isn't it? Nice car - I test drove one in exactly that colour/wheel combo in the picture. Such a quality item - it felt like a Swiss watch.

Yeah it's nice. I'm normally more of a V8 powering the back wheels kind of person but I actually really like it. I do prefer the Golf mind (think the Golf looks nicer outside but the interior is marginally poorer).

I rarely get to ask for car specifics (just a case of get what you're given) and don't really think the red and black seats go with the colour but the S Tronic is brilliant as are the auto dimming headlights and the adaptive cruise control works much better than that on the RS4 I had for a few weeks at the end of last year (suppose it's a newer version).

I also like the chrome roof rails (again an optional extra), in that blue I think it makes it look like a mini RS4/6.

You have to ask from Autocar lol

Porsche 1st (but I'm ignoring that as not relevant to most potential owners), then BMW, Audi, Merc

Can't believe the Merc keeps coming last.
Drove the A45 and the 135i and thought the Merc was much more entertaining, better balance, better brakes, more special inside and out, and silly fast!
BMW better sounding (although synthetised) and cheaper, but still not a patch on the Merc.

Merc does OK on Auto Express today vs. Q3 RS and Golf R (Golf wins). Big problem seems to be Merc's quite laggy power delivery. In top 50-70 took 14s in the Merc IIRC. Not really a huge problem, but it's a bit of a chore when so many modern turbo engines are so quick on the uptake.

Wasn't Audi's S3 Sportback press car something like £49k? I'm sure it's a very competent car but that's crazy money.

A45 felt more hardcore, more akin to the old RS3 and 1M. I think that's reflective of the price too, and it's real world 0-60 times. Hang on... I think I took a picture of it somewhere....

Need to look at the bigger picture really; very few people who buy these cars will pay list price for them.

Lovely looking car - but even with a chunky discount it's too much dough. A Golf R can be had with 8% or so off - what can you get on the A45 or S3?

Absolutely no discount was available when I was looking last summer

broker4cars currently showing about 9-9.5% off an A45 and 6-6.5% off an S3 Sportback. Not enough to make up the initial difference though and this is where the M135i really does conclusively beat the competition; 15%.

That could just be because its been out longer though.

The BM is a great deal - in terms of pure showroom appeal even the Golf beat it to my mind though. Great to drive though I'm sure it is, I just didn't like the looks or the cabin that much. A-class is sporty, but it's quite claustrophobic inside next to the Audi in particular I thought. As a day-to-day rapid hatch though, I'd probably be very happy with all of them - it was only really the Golf's lease deals that got me looking at this segment (coupled with impending baby for Mrs. Actus Reus).

My Sportback was only £24k (it's a company car and that's it's P11D value) - I went with:
Sportback, 2.0tdi, SE With:
Nav
Storage pack (pointless)
Comfort pack
Misano red
17" alloys
Audi Sound system
Debadged
Something odd that I notice was front ISOFIX points - can't remember if I specd those

I didn't see the need for all the shiny stuff, but I do if I was going to buy it - Otherwise I might have specd Xenons, chrome stuff

It worked out cheaper than a Golf which was odd too...

The A45 looks too similar to the other 'lesser models' in the range, as does my M135i! The merc's interior looks more special but the quality, fit and finish is poorer. It's definitely faster but then there's the price!

Who on earth would order red or part red leather on a blue car - revolting combination

It's the kind of thing I'd do - I had a black Y reg Punto with red interior... I loved it. I was the only one... getmecoat

Black with red looks OK IMHO - blue with red looks rubbish though. Check out some of the interior choices over on the Porsche section though - when they say 'red' they mean 'red'!
