Lucky me received notification of a bus lane penalty today frown (plus the 'admin fee' from the lease company). I don't dispute driving on that road at the stated time, but having gone back and checked it on streetview I think I figured out how the mistake was made. I was turning right at this junction:

I have expertly highlighted the relevant sign for the 'bus lane'. When approaching from this angle it is difficult to spot this sign and read it. From the other direction it looks like this:

So, I'm wondering if the signage is really adequate when making that right turn? I imagine this a nice little earner! I have a feeling that it may be difficult to appeal this since the lease company kindly accepted the fine on my behalf, but it would be good to have the PH opinion. Thanks, M.

Yes - like you, I think that's totally inadequate for someone turning right from that junction - especially if they're not local. There should be a sign on the opposite pavement pointing down the road you came from.

It's worth an appeal - however unlikely you think it might be to get a result. I appealed a parking ticket recently, with the cynical thoughts of 'no chance' in the back of my mind.

Imagine my surprise when they revoked the ticket! I was on pretty marginal ground too - I parked on a pavement with double yellows in the road, so I knew full well I was technically in breach. However, I sent them a copy of the reciept from buying a new TV from the shop I had parked outside, and they let me off!

So - always worth an appeal.

Yeah but the bus lane doesn't start there does it?

It starts at the blue signs further up the road past those two turnings
At the Natwest Bank where the signs will be turned on when in force.

Always appeal. 99% of people don't which is why they make so much dosh.

The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD) are your friend.

Bus lanes must conform to the Regs or they are not enforceable - many do not conform (because many councils are inept).

It's difficult to tell from your pictures whether this bus lane conforms or not.

Google the Regulations - they'll tell you everything.

Agree. I got 3 in one week (same road) a couple of months ago. I took pictures of all the signs, looked up the correct regulations and sent a good email to the counsel. I got off with it and a week later they put a notice up on their web site stating that all penalties issued will be refunded.
