North London to Reading on a weekday afternoon

Got an interview in north London (Crouch End to be precise) at 3pm next Monday, will be driving back to Reading afterwards. Expecting the interview to finish around 4ish, I'm keen not to go back along the M25 then M4 as I live in north Reading and the traffic will be horrendous getting from M4 to home. Was thinking about going M25 then M40 then coming off at junction 5 and heading south to Reading from there, has anyone got any other suggestions? Shortest time/distance isn't that important, I'd rather have more interesting roads and less traffic!
