I've had a Garmin Nuvi for the last 6 years, and has been great, although maps starting to get out of date.

I am going on a road trip next month from Uk down to south/ France, Up through Switzerland and Germany.

I need a Satnav that will work flawless in these countries. My sense of direction is terrible so rely on sat nav.

Would also be good if can input geo. co ordinations, as European addresses look complicated!

Budget up to around £150.

Thanks

Why don't you just update the maps?

I run a Nuvi 205W that I bought in the USA in 2004
I have worldwide 2014 maps that run flawlessly on it... mostly from the SD card to be truthful as the internal memory isn't that big.
The only thing I don't have is JCV but I can live without that!

Just a thought as updating the maps will be a whole lot cheaper than buying a new unit.

I use a TomTom 1005 for European travel and it works very well with the latest maps, plus the live traffic, speed camera updates etc are standalone and don't rely on your mobile and roaming data.

Thanks,

I splashed out on this in the end, mainly for the 7" screen if I'm honest, and seemed to have good reviews.

I didn't think it would be worth updating the old, as it is rather slow at times and guessing the new ones will be much quicker.

It should arrive in the morning, so will update on how I get on in the uk.

oops, forgot the link! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-2797LMT-Lifetime-Up...

And to show how big it is!!

I may have to start taking it out of the windscreen, as it is rather obvious!

But shouldn't have to squint any more.

Looking to get my first sat nav, how user friendly is this model? I've only experienced three thus far, one in an E60 5 series that had extremely clear layout/ verbal directions but hopeless to program, a tom tom and a garmin that were both ambiguous with road layout and verbal directions but more versatile in setting routes.

I'm not IT proficient and don't need bells and whistles, just a device capable of delivering clear instructions for the last few kms of a journey. Oh and what is the benefit of "live"?

I think it is pretty user friendly, you don't have to get involved in all the bells and whistles if you don't want to.

Live gives you live traffic info and had saved me hours and hours over the years, to the point where I have it working on my way to and from work, a journey I could do with my eyes shut but where a helping hand advising on hold ups along the route can be invaluable. It also does live speed cameras, so if someone further up the road than you sees a camera van and reports it in tomtom then you get an alert as you approach.

Garmin all the way for me, I really dislike Tom Toms. I'm pretty sure you can get the USA update on the Garmin

Depending what phone you have but have you looked at phone apps? Very impressed with CoPilot running on a mates phone in France last year, it's "interesting roads" route turned out to be pretty much exactly the same as we'd worked out on a map and programmed in to my TomTom Rider 2. You can also get a TomTom app for phones, not sure if Garmin do one too. Alternatively the £150 you're thinking of spending buys a lot of international roaming to use Google Maps.
