MOT pass advisories
Discussion
My S3 passed its MOT today, with a couple of advisories and comments:
Servo pipe cracked - easy to replace, does anyone know whether its 1/2 inch or 3/8 inch? The tester also commented that there didn't seem to be much servo effect - it might be there's a leak on the pipe, if not is there a way of testing a servo?
Play in steering rack inner joints - not an MOT fail because they are hidden, the tester also commented that replacing them might not make any significant difference - is this anyone else's experience?

think the pipe is 3/8" (10mm)
Put a brake pipe clamp on the pipe then try brakes (carefully) should be a noticeable difference.... Lot more pedal effort required!!!!
Steering rack, speak to a specialist like Kiley Clinton

KC refurbed mine last year for the same reason. Very reasonable and an excellent job. Nice people too.Put a brake pipe clamp on the pipe then try brakes (carefully) should be a noticeable difference.

Pipe is 3/8 inch available on fleabay, just changed mine, sold by the metre length, which is just about six inches too long, a quick chop and jubilee clip on, job done. Maybe it was deteriorating on inside, so by changing it could cure the problems.
Not recorded as an advisory, but my MOT tester commented on the "play" in the steering on mine, he was happy with it as "Its a 24 year old TVR"

To test your servo. With the engine off pump the brake pedal several times to exhaust the servo, then hold your foot on the brake pedal and start the engine whilst holding pedal pressure. The pedal should go down as vacuum is put back into the servo. No need to rev engine as vacuum is higher on tickover. This is how the tester would test for servo working. If there is a leak on the pipe to manifold which is highly likely it will significantly affect servo assistance. No need for any clamps with this method.

Make sure you get vacuum pipe as heater hose or similar may collapse under the vacuum.
On eBay also be careful as many list as vacuum pipe and it isn't. Make sure it is reinforced. You can tell those who are taking the p*** as when asked if it will stand up to brake servo they'll just reply it's vacuum pipe and use is your responsibility!!Gassing Station | S Series | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
