There's not much ZS activity on here, so I thought I'd start a thread, apologies if this has already been done but, show us your zed!

Mine:

I think these are the most under appreciated cars on the roads today but there's going to be a need for a strong community of enthusiasts to ensure their survival as the scrap yards are filling up fast!

Bought this new in 2003. My good lady's daily driver. Apart from tyres, exhaust silencer and a Water Pump ( twenty quid off ebay ) no money spent and car has been faultless. Will be eleven years old next month. Still good to drive :~

Last week I bought an 03 MG ZT 1.8t in my least favourite colour XPGrey.. rolleyes I'll post some images of the bigger Zed later. Prefer the more vibrant colours. Bought it as a project problem car as the price was right. Nice spec too ... Car was non-starter with suspect damaged cylinder head gasket. Since confirmed. Non starter because of FFS ( Fuel Filter Syndrome ) where the in-tank Fuel Filter separates and so pressure to the fuel injectors is lost. Looks like a BMW design as their logo was on several parts of the in-tank filter. A quick search on the web revealed what the cause of that loss of pressure was. There's a 99% sure fix and that's a little plastic clip costing six quid posted. Not easy fitting that after realigning the separated Fuel Filter because of the near full petrol tank. Car started immediately.

I shall enjoy fixing things on this car. Work delayed as two nuts securing Turbocharger to Exhaust Manifold had been rounded in previous ownership. Giot them off in the end.

So, started removing parts of the engine today. In addition to the Cylinder Head Gasket, I'll fit a new Water Pump, Timing Belt and both Auxiliary drive belts as both have numerous cracks in the PolyVee surface so it's only a matter of time before they break up. In my limited amateur experience of the K-Series Rover and MG engines, a prime cause of cylinder head gasket damage is overheating following coolant losses via a worn or wearing Water Pump. The timing belt looks fine but as all these items have to be disturbed doing the CHG, five birds with one stone scenario ... I'm taking pictures of the work in progress and will post a thread over on MG-Rover.org and may copy it here.

Is that what causes the car to not start after it's ran out of fuel until you put a full tank in? A lot of 180's do it, it's a weird one I've never heard explained!

No, not so. There are two entirely different fuel pump systems used in the ZS/45s and the larger 75/ZTs. The latter use a BMW type in-tank Fuel Filter ~ not surprising as the basic Rover 75 was produced under BMW's brief stewardship.

I have started a thread over on MG-Rover.org on my project MG ZT 1.8 petrol turbo.

Here it is :~

http://forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=654370

I'm enjoying sorting the car's problems and am pleased with progress so far.

It has been to Cornwall, that's where my previous one came to a very sticky end.

Take it all over the country, terrific fun and good value too. Loads of ZRs competing as the 1.4 formula really popular. Numerous older BRMs are out there together with the VVC version for those that need a bit more go.

I've heard about the 1400 formula, what is the rough cost for running a ZR, I.e. Prep, scruitineering etc

All the info is here;

http://www.endurance-rallying.co.uk/

On top of the base car you need some basic safety kit and if you want to compete in the Championship, control tyres are needed at £65 a shot.

A really nice bunch of competitors always willing to help. It proably helps if you've done the odd motor club 12 car type event just to get your head around the some of the stuff that goes on, particularly the road navigation.

I've done marshaling but that's about as far as it goes, my local club does do a lot of 12 car events though, never been to one mind!

Tidy! I do like the mk2's, a real future classic, what' problems have you encountered over the years?

Problems? Not really, only issues have been caused by others, such as a colleague breaking the passenger door latch by trapping the seatbelt in it, and a rep in a Passat setting off from a junction before I did despite me being in front of him.

Biggest problem for me is the fuel consumption, but its worth it.

Very good looking car the MK2 MG ZS has both presence and nice stance for what is after all an ordinary production car. I prefer the MKI Zeds. Now with two MK1s in the fleet. A ZS120+ bought new in May 2003 which has been superbly reliable and mainly driven by my better half, and a recently purchased MG ZT 1.8t with a few problems which I shall enjoy using as a daily driver for a while.

12 car events are a blast and for about a tenner to enter plus fuel are a hilarious way of spending an evening......way better than tv!

Picked my zed up a couple of years ago now.

I am the 3rd owner of it and when I got it she had been sat under a load of trees for quite some time and was in need of a good clean.

Spent the first afternoon getting the engine bay from this

to this

The body work needed some tlc as well, I replaced the MG badges with some metal ones off ebay

Plus this old tatty exhaust got swapped out for a Janspeed Xpower back box

Sounds much better too!

Recently got a foam lance and pressure washer so gave that a bash a few weekends ago.

Different badge as the other one fell off lol.
