Will be spending 3 or 4 nights in NY in September on the way back from visiting my brother in Bermuda.

SWMBO fancies the Waldorf Astoria, can anyone else suggest a better alternative?

I'm not opposed to it just looking at other options before she goes ahead and books it.

She has been to NY before, I haven't, we tend to book most of our Hotels based on either recommendations and/or TripAdvisor reviews.

Living in Dubai we are exposed to big glitzy chain hotels on a weekly basis so any left field boutique ideas welcomed.

Probably not the same standard but we stayed here. http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/nycrt-renais...

Good location, nice size and equipped rooms. Liked it.

Gramercy park, I alway fell like the proprietor could be a Mr T. Burton.
Gansevoort. Great roof top bar.

Hudson the Ian Schrager place is pretty good in my opinion, great bar and location. Standard rooms are small so go up. The W is supposed to be very good as well.

Waldorf a bit dowagy and old fashioned. Past its heyday.

Stayed at Andaz 5th Avenue last time. Opposite NY Library. Excellent.

For that type of hotel how about the Essex House, part of the Jemeriah chain so well known to you in Dubai. It's right on central park, only had a drink in there before but seems very nice.

Try the Kimberley, just round the corner from the Waldorf.

with NY location is more important than the hotel...you could try:
Essex House - on Central Park South, lots of history, location great
Le Parker Meidien on 57th - great location just south of park
Affinia by Madison Square Garden - best room I've stayed in by far in NY
W is a great hotel, but I don't like the location in midtown east
Tribeca Grand would be a good option - great location

Think the missus stayed there last time, tbh want to avoid a chain I am surrounded by, even though it is not a Jumeirah property anymore.

Another great hotel and very trendy is The Standard, High Line, although not the cheapest. Really good food and bar. Modern design. Has floor to ceiling windows in the rooms for great views, although don't wander around in the nod as everyone in the High Line Park also get's a great view (or not in my case!)

Stayed there a number of years back with my wife, when it was a Jumeriah hotel, it is now a JW Marriot hotel. Location is superb, try and get a room overlooking Central Park. Suites are not huge but comfortable, and very well fitted as per middle eastern standards. If they retained the same staff, you are in for a treat, service was impecable, the concierge was exceptional, getting us tickets to the Book of Mormon during the opening season, we could not get tickets anywhere else. Great food in the restaurants, and the bar staff are great fun. They also prepared a picnic basket to eat at Central Park, which was a really nice touch.

It may be a notch down, but I really liked the library hotel, certainly fits the criteria of not a chain.

Thanks again for suggestions, she'll need to go through them all now!

We also now need to decide how long we are spending there, as it stands we plan to arrive on Sep 11th, can't decide whether that's a good idea or not..
