I have always assumed that a yank truck (i.e. a more modern F150) is deemed to be a commercial vehicle by HMRC meaning that VAT can be reclaimed on it's purchase as well as fuel.

However, my mind has now been placed in doubt as HMRC have stated that any double cab (which I believe includes Super Cab's) pickup under 1 tonne payload is not classed as a commercial vehicle. F150's are half tonne pickup's (but have a payload of circa 700kg?).

I know a few of you use your yanks for business purposes, but do you claim all relevant tax and expenses back against them as well?

You've answered the question with your middle paragraph.

Basically, more than three seats needs to be one tonne payload to classify as a commercial vehicle.

How feasible is it to have the payload rating increased to over 1 tonne (and I presume the towing capacity decreased)?

get ready for the usual whingers who want the a la carte selection of laws to apply to the vehicle

i.e. want it to be a commercial vehicle for BiK and VED , but want it to be a car for tolls and speed limits ...

Depending on its spec and age it's possible to get a one tonne upgrade on some F150 trucks.

I don't suppose you know the in's and out's of when an 'upgrade' is possible and what the process is for this?
