just having some silly thoughts atm!
any issues with engine transplants into a pre 90s 911?
just thinking a 996 gt3 engine, or 996 turbo/gt2 engine?
old skool looks and modern powerplant, starting to appeal to me more.
just wondered if anyone had looked into doing this, or had done it, and the main headaches!

The first thing that comes to mind is that you're trying to put a water-cooled engine into an air-cooled chassis, so you'd need to somehow mount the water radiators into a car not designed for them, and find a route for all the associated extra plumbing.

I would say from the electronics side you might have some challenges - after around 2001 IIRC the powertrain had a simple CAN Bus set up, therefore if you were going to try and use a standard Engine Control Unit, you'd need to trick it and provide the signals it needed - can be done, but not the easiest thing.
The Cup car engine as described above would be far more standalone in this respect and is probably an easier integration.
But as already mentioned, cooling it would be my first concern...

A 993 lump is a much easier swap and with a remap, removal of power steering drive + open exhaust you will be close to 300bhp. Add some lightweight panels and your power/weight will have you upsetting some pretty nippy machines. I looked at the watercooled transplant route a while back and just couldnt get it to stack up unless you used a mental engine and by that time (£££) you might as well have just created a mental aircooled engine instead.

Best suggestion yet, however, why would you want to change a classic 911 from standard, it's like painting a 'tash on the Mona Lisa really?996TT02 said:

Did you click the link in the 2nd post? yes they hacked the rear shelf but it wasn't because the engine wouldn't fit:As for why you would do it...maybe so you can be gt3 quick but still look cool and wear a beard?
thanks for the replys. tbh I love the look of the classic 911s but they just are not massively fast. I really want something properly quick!

Beggars the question, why did Porsche screw up the rear end starting with the 996 then?
Rear lighting height regulations and such other? Bumper height regs?

And dont forget that its basically the same Mezger lump as the 996 GT3 and Turbo albeit with water cooled heads etc etc.
930 are cool but already very strong money. Plus tuning a 930 these days will most likely devalue it as well. The car is already a bit of a mix up of parts from different cars so modding it wont really change to much.
A 930 plus tuning will end up very costly. Whereas tuning this will end up cheaper than even a base 930!
