Socially libertarian policies (eg legalising drugs, prostitution & guns, removing all restrictions on gambling etc) would horrify most people over 60, mothers of young children and anyone who reads the Daily Mail.

Economically libertarian policies (eg fully privatised healthcare, education and pensions; unlimited immigration; no minimum wage, employment protection, housing benefit, child benefit or tax credits; repeal of planning restrictions to allow a development free-for-all; binning Trident, leaving NATO and the EU) would horrify just about everyone. Ok, perhaps not the bit about leaving the EU……..
Any 'belief system' implemented without restraint or common (real world) sense is dangerous, that's where we get into fundamentalism. If people could get rid of their ideologies and moved forward with what works, what is best practise I think we would end up with a society that has a sprinkling of socialism, libertarianism, capitalism, communism, protectionism, democracy, republicanism, demarchy etc.
Like what we have now, but why are people unhappy? The system is failing and the party gangs always put ideologies ahead of what works best. The War on drugs as a prime example.

Baldrick, believe me, eternity in the company of Beelzebub and all his hellish instruments of death will be a picnic compared to five minutes with Ann Widdecombe and Rowan Williams.

Apolgies to devout Adderists for misquote.

Something someone posted on this thread - I can't find it easily - made me search YouTube for Blair and religion and I found a debate between him and Hitchens.

What the poster suggested was that Blair was only a spouse catholic, changing because of pressure from the other side. This was something I had never considered.

But after watching the debate I've got to say I'm now convinced he's gone catholic because of Cherry. He argued without conviction and without emotion. Just as he always did in the labour party. In my opinion he was in that for what he could get out of it - in fact changing it to suit his ambitions - and if he had the power he would out the vicar of christ and move it his way.

There was a telling moment - he was a subtle bugger, that Hitchens - when the use of birth control was brought into the argument, with Cherry's admission of forgetting her anti-spermicidal cream (if the story was true of course, which I would bet against) public knowledge. Blair then said, without any hesitation, that, in effect, he didn't mind committing a mortal sin as everyone changed their religion to suit. Or, to put it another way, popes are all wrong.

He's no catholic.

Here we go again. Would anyone with more than 2 braincells believe that a person who believes in magic pixies is fit to run a country?

Seem to remember that this occured many years ago during the dark ages.

Time to reopen the assylums? Intelligence seems to be rapidly going backwards.

The only useful comment from the bibble seems to be based around avoiding apples, which has to be a good thing. (Apple as in rippoff for the stupid not Granny Smiths or that moderately famous bunch of hippies from the 60s that recorded the odd track).

I really don't think this has to become yet another religion thread.

It's a good premise for a discussion really; political stereotypes and how people fall into certain ways of thinking according to their political or social views. (See blind adoration of UKIP, Labour or Cons for example).

There'll never be a party that matches all of my views, so I'm swayed towards the one that offers the closest.

The last election in Aus was difficult.

Labour and atheist, Conservative and religious.
Or the Greens that are atheist and liberal.

As an economic conservative, social liberal atheist, it was a hard choice.

Especially when I want tight boarder controls and no mining taxes.

It's definitely much more polarising in other countries such as Aus and the US. Thankfully, the UK is a predominantly secular country which makes my choices easier.

Also said by Cameron and quoted in the article:

"Of course, faith is neither necessary nor sufficient for morality"

On this, if little else in that article, I agree.

I dislike evangelicals, whether religionist evangelicals or atheist evangelicals.

Guilty - Monday. If he was sincere he would parry questions with dogma like they all do, and finish with a homily such as "Yes, my son, but He moves in a mysterious way". To be frank I despair at the way so many voters could be conned by such an obvious charlatan. I am convinced that none of them, the 'believers' in 'high places', actually do 'believe'. Personally, I rejected all of it after leaving Sunday School and experiencing the venality and corruption in real life yet I go to church weddings, funerals and christenings. Enjoy the hymns too, but consider them folk music.
