Not being an Ebay professional (despite having had an account for over ten years), I would like some opinions on how long a buyer should take to pay for a item which they have won.

I normally pay almost immediately after the auction, and certainly within 24 hours when I next log-on.

I had an item for sale which ended on Saturday evening with a unique bid which was placed very shortly before the auction end; here we are Monday evening and still no signs of payment, despite the 'automatic' invoice and another invoice which I sent on Sunday. I emailed her earlier today and have had no response.

How long is it normal to wait before I raise a dispute about non-payment? Am I being unreasonable here?

Unfortunately eBay seems to be full of people who bid on items with no intention of actually buying them!

My wife makes and sells reptile harnesses, to buy one you choose a colour and size then click buy it now, it then instantly tells you that payment is due immediately. The amount if people who buy one then don't pay, or who take ages to pay.

I normally state in my listing contact or payment within 24 hours before I relist or second chance offer. I think if you send a message to the buyer stating you require contact by a certain time should cover you

At least 3 or 4 days before you start contacting them. Sending ANOTHER invoice the day after and now an email today makes you seem a tad pushy to me, which could possibly make them change their mind.

Personally I would've left it till about thursday before emailing them.

Screw that. 2 days then file a No Payment. Some tart did this to me the other day. Offered it to the next highest bidder who sent me a payment almost immediately.

Open up an "Unpaid item dispute" immediately.

i have zero tolerance for these people who bid, win an auction and don't pay. It's just rude.

I had a hoax bidder on a Kinect i was selling (xbone). After about a week he simply said "Yeah. I bid on two different ones. I don't want yours now."

Not even an apology for wasting my time.

Personally I think 24 hours from the end of the auction is sufficient time for somebody to pay.

Depends what you set out in your description.

I always ask for payment within 48 hours (allowing for the fact that people can be away with work, weekends, etc).

Never had problems with people paying until i started to sell baby stuff. It seems the mums buy it then wait for benefits payments in order actually pay for it. I kid you not, had messages asking if i could wait until they got their benefits come through. Had someone ask if i would accept a 6 week payment plan for a fking pushchair laugh

By contrast, I've never had any trouble selling baby stuff, and always find it attracts good honest buyers.

Electronics (especially iPhones) are a nightmare to sell, and attract the worst kind of PITA buyers.

Totally unreasonable behaviour IMO!
Bear in mind if you're selling on eBay you are the same as a jumble sale so acting as if it's Big Business is crazy.

OP - did they pay in the end?

Why is it unreasonable....? I (the seller) have been charged a fairly hefty fee for selling an item. The only way to get a fee credit/refund is to follow ebay procedure (UID).

Or do you think that it is fair that I pay the selling fee for an item that some selfish individual committed to buying, then backed out, then ignored my polite messages requesting payment?

As a seller, I have listed items before that sold for 1p (+ postage). Even though it was below the cost of driving to the post office, i still honoured the transaction because that is what civilised people do.

It's unreasonable because you seem to be treating non-immediate payment as the virtual equivalent of having your dog bummed. Just because somebody doesn't pay the nanosecond the auction ends doesn't mean they're going to back out.

Bit of an exaggeration there, i think.

How long do you suggest is reasonable then ?

In my case I waited 4 days for payment then ran out of patience. Turns out i was right anyway. It takes about 2 minutes to log into paypal and send a payment. It really isn't that hard. The sooner you pay, the sooner the seller is satisfied and the sooner the buyer gets the item that they want.

It really need not be a long, drawn-out transaction.
Ebay is not exactly a pleasant experience at the best of times with barely literate people asking stupid questions etc.

Some of us would rather just get it over and done with.

It does take 2 mins if you live with constant internet access. I think 2/3/4 days is reasonable, it depends what you set in your description when selling, then both parties have an expectation to meet.

No it isn't. Jumble sales are social events for selling virtually worthless items and unwanted junk.

I would never sell valuable items that way, which is why i use Ebay.

I agree, generally I can log on & pay but I travel extensively & sometimes struggle to pay for a few days.

It's 2014, not 2004. It just isn't reasonable at all. You wouldn't get away with it anywhere else.

but you know when the auction is due to end !

maybe not bidding in the first place would be better than expecting people to wait for you all the time...
