My father in law bought a 2011 XJ from a main Jag dealer in Northern Ireland 2 months ago. He lives in Southern Ireland where the TV tuner will not work(works fine in NI). After some hardcore goggling it turns out that it is due to the digital encoding which is used in Southern Ireland. They use Mpeg4 decoding in South Ireland and MPEG2 in NI/UK.

Can anyone shed any light on this one? Can the tv tuner be upgraded on his car?

I know the facelift cars in 2013 got upgraded which allowed them to handle Mpeg2 and Mpeg4. I wonder was that a software or a hard wear upgrade?

The optional digital TV tuner and DAB receiver have been upgraded, and the TV tuner is now capable of receiving both Mpeg4 as well as Mpeg2 encoded transmissions, dependent on market. - See more at: http://www.prodrivermags.com/road-tests/268-road-t...

The dealer was unable to help. They said there is "No way to get the tv working"

There has been some mucking about with the X351 firmware pertaining to the TV tuner and the DAB receiver. I think it's taken a couple of goes to get the firmware revision right, as cars getting the updates were then experiencing problems in other areas. My own 2011 XJ had a problem with it that led to it flattening the battery and getting another firmware update. It's fine now, although I don't use the TV tuner.

When you say that the dealer won't help, is this the NI dealer? Or a local dealer in the Republic?

You'd have to think that if there was a "national firmware" version, it would be possible to overwrite one country's firmware with another's. Does Jaguar have an office in Ireland? If not, there's a Jaguar UK rep on jaguarforum.com who may be able to shed some light.

ROI uses DVB-T2, we didn't for quite a while (it is used for HD multiplexes here) so maybe the tuner is DVB capable only?

Sorry, when I said "won't help". It was more that they can't help as they don't really understand the problem. The answer I got was " it will never work" without explanation which is acceptable but I wanted to know a reason for it not working which I had to research myself.

Since my post I have spoken again to the Dealer in Belfast, then spoke to the Jag dealer in Dublin who knew all about the problem. ROI analog tv services ceased broadcasting a few months back so anyone with a pre 2013 Jag with a TV tuner can no longer watch TV in Ireland. The Tech told me that a few customers were going nuts about it. He said that Jag are working on a "solution" but it will be at the end of the year at the earliest and the "kit" will cost about £1,000. He says that it is a hardware issue.

I also called Jag customer service in the UK. They more or less said that they can't make cars with tv tuners that work in every country. blah blah.....Told her that my father in law was "very disappointed" but all she could say was "Sorry" She was not aware of any solution being worked on.
