"The GT86 is underpowered by at least 100BHP" - you just don't get it.

This kind of thing is said about the same cars that have ' you shoulda bought a.......' said about them.

I had a guy tell me 'you shoulda bought a turbo, my mate has a 300 bhp VX220 turbo and its nuts, nuts I tell you'.

He drives an A6 TDi estate (or is it Sportback?), mapped of course. Nuts, nuts I tell you!

1) "I'm a petrolhead" - usually means the person saying it watches Top Gear, and buys Top Gear/What Car magazine. Nothing more.

2) "I'm an enthusiast" - for me brings to mind a total anorak, and trouser rubbing a la Vic Reeves. Although I'm hard pushed to think of something better to describe people 'into cars'.

Generally, 'real' petrolheads rarely say really stupid stuff (at least not connected with cars).

These forums are full of stupid stuff, although my personal pet hate is opinionated stuff spouted about driving and anything else motor related, by a person when profile is checked, drives a diesel A2.

I think of myself as a bit of a petrolhead/enthusiast.

And I think the Audi A2 is a cracking little car. A car before its time IMO.

When it comes to things BMW-shaped, using terms like E39 / E92 / E38 / E46 etc etc (if talking to another petrolhead) would seem to me to be pretty reasonable.

What does make me go a little are references to owning a "1'er" or a "3'er".

hehe I've never actually see that, I don't think. I believe "Loti" (one 'i') is a valid plural of the plant but it still sounds bloody stupid.

Years ago a 'car' mate of mine told me that taping a 12v hairdryer to the inlet of the engine would develop more power.

I told him that wasn't strictly true as a hairdryer wouldn't produce enough/any extra air and it wouldn't make a difference unless the fuelling was tweaked to suit even if it did.

He said his mate had tried it and at 70 MPH the engine was running at much lower rev's so was producing more power so it must work.

Not sure he understands it even today.
And yet huge car companies, employ thousands of staff and spend billions of pounds finding ways to boost power and reduce fuel consumption when your mate has the answer. Why they don't just strap a hair direr to the engine inlet and save the bother I don't know. Perhaps they could put it on the options list.
There's a rather wonderful episode of Roadkill where they started with a 70s Chevy with 5 litre V8 that developed 144hp. After some basic tuning they get that up to 198 hp.

They then strapped 3 petrol powered leaf blowers to it, ( which can pump 2,100 cubic feet/minute) adding some serious tubing to get that air to the engine, and managed to get 205 hp. Given the effort they went to that should dispel any theories about hair driers improving performance.

The video is rather entertaining, and they ran some quarter mile to show exactly how much difference 5 leaf blowers can make.

OMG your DPF and turbo and injectors will blow up within 30 seconds cuz it happens on all diesels.

Don't buy a car you want now, instead save up for a house and then still don't buy a car cuz you should pay your mortgage off so you can retire and then not be able to enjoy the car you really wanted cause your old ( although this is more the penny pinchers of PH)

If that's referring the guy in his twenties with some inheritance money who was considering either buying a new Ferrari, or a house, I think most of the responses were more along the lines of 'don't buy a new one, buy something that's already taken the depreciation hit and get a house as well.' = long-term quids-in!

Not quite penny-pinching - just injecting a degree of common-sense?

In fairness, maybe they do get it. Assuming "they don't get it" because they have a different opinion to you is a bit arrogant.

Plenty of reviewers, professional motoring journalists, thought it needed more power. Are they missing the point too?

The s1 Elise with 118bhp is a lovely little thing. Does that make the more powerful variants bad cars because the owners "don't get it"?
