Looking at the possibility of buying my wife a 987, would be a 2.7 in all likelihood, 2005 ish with around 50K miles. What are these like re major engine failures (better or worse than the S?) and anything in particular to look out for please?

plenty of info out there (hartech/google search etc)but the 2.7 seems the safe buy out of the m96/97 engine range.if you can stretch to a post march 2006 build car with the upgraded ims it should prove to be very reliable.if looking at an earlier car less problems with early 2.7 than any 3.2s!

My 02 2.7l engine has over 278K miles on it. Save for a water pump (at 172K miles) and a passenger side VarioCam solenoid and actuator (at over 240K miles) the engine has been problem free. Even on the original clutch.

I think the engine has the dual row IMS bearing as it has the shallow IMS end plate but I can't be sure. IIRC, I read a post by one (USA Porsche) engine expert who claims one can't even depend upon this as Porsche somehow managed to mix shallow end plates with single row bearings.

In my book the 2.7l engine is a sweet engine.
