Hi all

A question for you knowledgeable types...

My speedo is pretty bad. When used in conjunction with a GPS (which I realise isn't necessarily gospel), it is at least 10mph high at 60-70, although it does go back to zero fine when stationary.

Is there any adjustment in the system at all? My car is an S3 so has the electronic speedo I believe. The car is on standard OZ wheels with 205/60 profile tyres.

Any help would be good, as speed cameras are a constant source of nervousness at the moment...!

Very interested in this as mine suffers in the same way. In fact, it may be worse as I estimate it can be 20% too high although it's erratic. It also seems to be linked (consistently) with the milometer so my mileage is racking up too high. But at least that's offset by the 18 months I went with no working speedo/milometer at all!

Ah, now my mileometer could be rubbish as well, but I haven't realised yet! I have only had the car over about 500 miles so far, so still finding out different facets of its character...!

Think you've answered your own question, no cure, its part of its character (along with misting up dials etc. etc.) biggrin

Mine has a small potentiometer in the back. I tried fiddling with it while diagnosing my under-reading problem but it didn't appear to do much. I replaced the sender in the end and the speedo is now very accurate so I haven't played with the potentiometer since. It's under a sticker that says 'warranty void if removed', so do so at your own risk! Just kidding, what is there to lose? If it does nothing, just put it back where it was.

Is the sender the sensor in the gearbox? If its not too much money, I might change it.

Worryingly, when I had the satnav up I found that it wasn't even consistently wrong. Very occasionally it seemed to read right which means that I'm normally the guy crawling through a 40mph speed camera at a safe 30...!

Yes, it's in the gearbox. Easy enough to replace once the exhaust is off. Here's what I used with great success, but my speedo wouldn't read above 20mph:

That is a symptom of a failing yellow connector or a bad earth. When I turned the fan on and the lights on I could accelerate from 50 to 70 in under a second. Sorting out the connector resolved that issue and the speedo remained consistent there after.

I don't think I have any light related problems... When funds/time permits I may look at changing the sender I think and see what happens from there.

When I put the headlamps on or the heater fan, infact anything that requires electrical power then my speedo jumps up another 40mph or so.
I posted about this when I became the new owner and most of the comments were "mine does that" or "make sure all your earth points are clean"

I spent the best part of a day either cleaning or replacing various earth leads etc which did nothing to cure the problem so almost 4 years down the line I have left it alone just like the mad fuel gauge readings, steamed up dials, the odd water leak etc.

Is a distinctly dodgy speedo not an mot fail then? I would have thought mine would at best scrape through with a lenient tester...

My S1 is the same the faster you go the more it's over, and it's a cable on the S1s, you would think it would read slower if the cable was getting worn

Mine went through a (reputable) MOT with the speedo completely inoperative, which surprised me but I didn't query it.
