Theres a VIN decoder somewhere on Miata.net that will tell you the production date of the car, presuming the engine is still in its original shell that will get you pretty close?

Hi yes I have just completed my special kit car using MX5 running gear and the engine that should have been in the donor does not match the paperwork and the IVA man wants to know the age of the lump.
I know its from 1989 to 1992 but he needs proof.

On a good note I drove it 25 miles to the test centre and although it failed on minor things it was good to drive back and yes an HSK turbo coupled to no weight= damn quick acceleration.
