Defender with Puma 2.2 engine problems
Discussion
I was wondering if I am the only person suffering from engine failures specifically intercooler air pipe failing? I have now suffered 5 failures within the last 11 months - the vehicle was newly registered in May 2013. I believe the first 4 failures resulted in a factory redesign of the intercooler pipe around the crankshaft pulley with an additional "bracket" to ensure it doesnt move. This seemed to do the job. However the same problem of limp home mode was suffered recently when the air hose on the other side of the engine failed. It has now got to the point of worrying if or more likely when it will fail again. Its a shame as I really like the vehicle.

I agree hooky,
I had mine replaced by dealer under warranty, when they test drove it, they found the, "other side", .... went wrong, so I don't know if they mis-diagnosed in the first place, or the other pipe blew as well....
It made me nervous that I can't take the car anywhere and I'll be asking to be towed home, especially as I take her in the EU .....
So far she's been ok, and I do tend to drive her in a, "spirited manner", ..... well ... as spirited as a Defender can be driven....
Sorry Sarge..... no fires, I thought that was only Ferrari and Lambo Miura's ....

well two days after having it returned from a LR garage "repaired" its gone again - a whole 70 miles later!! Again AA come out - cannot diagnose the problem - so tow truck again tomorrow. My question now is should I demand a replacement vehicle as it's totally unreliable? Must see what legal rights I have!

I have no idea, I would doubt it as LR will say its just a hose gone...... but I am certainly no expert.if it were me, I think I would return and return and return to the Franchise dealer that sold the car, I am assuming that its covered by the 3 year manufacture warranty.....
Having said that, I have a lot of experience with another of my cars, and have had problems and taken it back to a franchise dealer(s) and they looked at me confused and didn't know the answer ...... brilliant ...... so I went to an independent .....
As opposed to a Franchise that does not really care (i'm mentioning no names) if you come back or not, an Indie wants your business...... and as opposed to some 12 year old technician who looks like he is still at school, the Indie will have more time and will want to help you..... he wants to prove to you that he is good and for you to come back....
I did this with another car, and the Franchise didn't have a clue, the Indie went to town and sorted it for me .....
I have no idea who to recommend for a LR, but I'm certain you can get some recommendations here..... I'd get them to sort it, and if its only a hose its going to be cheap, take the bill and go sit in the Franchise dealers waiting room and refuse to move until they paid it, or given you something that does not cost them the money, but is the equivalent in value....

It's a very well known problem
If the engine is the old Transit/Mondeo engine in different format and power, why is there still such a problem with it and its still a problem? Surely the thousands of Transit and Mondeo owners would have resolved this years ago................. how is it different from the transit/mondeo engine?

Hi maverick
I don't think there is an issue with the engine itself, the problem is that in the van format the engine is transverse and plenty of room for all the ancillary equipment such as the hoses, but its a tight fit in the Defender with the longitudinal format and thus all the problems.....I believe!!

Just noticed this thread....
My experience with the 2.2 has been/is dreadful...The car is currently in the stealers for the umpteenth time...has had turbo to intercooler pipe replaced 3 times in total, lambda sensor worked itself loose, now dpf has done duff (even though no eml or dpf light), new heat shield for exhaust and they had to tighten screws in the floorpan that had worked loose.
I'd waited 6 months for the car and leased through work (it's a 110 U/W so cheap tax etc) but am now at my wits end with it.
Done 30k in 18 months and worked out it's been off the road for 8-10 weeks of that. Sure LR give you a replacement, but never a Defender...strange that!
Now about to go legal as the dealer "don't know why it keeps having these intake/exhaust related problems"!!! I'm not taking it back as I've stated it's not fit for purpose.
Great shame as I've always been a true advocate of the marque, but I'd rather have a 10yr old TD5 than this pile of rubbish! GUTTED.
Rant over....

Hi Biglump
Sounds very familiar - mine is a 110 double cab and has done 43k miles in 10 months from new!!
Mine is now with the LR dealer who informed me "they are talking with LR Head office" about the problem. It is now in there over 3 weeks! As you say, they have no problem in sorting an Enterprise vehicle, but never like-for- like!
I think once sorted I will get rid - totally unreliable. Shame as I really like it!.
keep on smiling

the culprit was found to be a split intercooler
Hello guys..... thanks for that, good to know..... does anyone know what the JE Engineering intercooler is like compared to the OEM one..... ?I'm wondering if they look similar and as such any warranty won;t be affected....?

I cant comment on the defender one but i had the full JE upgrade with bigger intercooler on my disco2 at 2 weeks old 11 years ago.. the je intercooler is much bigger, and i did have it split after 9 years. cost a tenner get welded ( split on a seam)and mucho skinned hands to get sorted..I'm wondering if they look similar and as such any warranty won;t be affected....?
