Also, and I know this is a bit horrible to say at this point in the circumstances, but you can get a vet to come to you when it is time.

The animal is far more relaxed and I think it is far less stressful for them.
Totally agree.

When I lost my cat a couple of years back, I did not want his last moments to be fear, being in some place he didn't know.

The vet came out to my house and he died on the table where he used to sleep.
Humphrey didn't like the vets however we took him there to be PTS, it's odd as he was calm, didn't struggle or give off any negative vibes at all, even when the vet took him to another room without us to prep him; it's almost as if he knew he was going off to a better place.

This is far more the norm. We very very rarely have it become a negative situation when they come to us, often because the pets have known us for years anyway or they're too poorly to be worried, they are given time it's relaxed and peaceful. Any hint that they become worried they get a little sedation. (this can happen at home aswell)

For some owners memories of their pets last moments at home is worse.

We will do home visits of course but it is not common.

My dog is terrified of vets - I think it stems back to some ahole vet in Leeds making a complete botched job of trying to get a microchip in her neck. It was awful to watch, he took multiple tries at it and she was howling in pain frown

Even when I tried to take her into a vet she'd never been in before, just to get some dental chews she was panicking. I take it she recognised the smells of a vet or something.

Its making me sad even thinking about it... but when its her time I'll definitely be getting the vet out to her.

frown that's terrible, really not sure how a vet could cock that up so badly.

Well Petra has spent most of the day in the garden (her favourite place) sat on the decking watching me work (her favourite pastime) and generally being spilt rotten.

Specially cooked chicken and rice for dinner tonight and although she's a little subdued (even for her as she's a very placid and quiet dog anyway) we have seen tails wagging and she was leaning into having her ear rubbed.

She's OK for now and that's the main thing.

One day at a time now.

Thanks to all for reading my ramblings.

As long as she is happy and not in pain, carry on. Especially coming up to this time of year she might want to spend a lot more time pottering about in the garden with you.

Hope Petra lasts a good while longer!.That has been a very hard read and seems to have got very dusty in the room.

I have only just got my wee dog 7 months ago but thought long and hard about this very difficult time when it comes.
I fully intend to make every day special for new best friend,as you don't get a terribly long time with them.

Callie the Border Terrier says keep on fighting Petra!.

Thanks for all the good wishes.

Rest assured that this was not a panicky owner false alarm as Petra has been on borrowed time for some time as she has lung issues (Bullae on one lung and a tumour in the other compounded by a persistent infection and a cyst) The vet reckons she has about 20-30% normal lung capacity.

Even the vet was amazed at the difference compared to our visit yesterday.

Tonight she has taken lots of treats but turned her nose up at her dinner - mind you a tin of pilchards resolved that problem and she is now a well fed 12 year old pup smile
Nice one.thumbup

Petra managed a play in the garden with the ball today (for all of about 2 mins) and a walk to the park (all of about 500 yards each way)

Lots of tail wagging though and she look very bright.

Again - thanks to all of you for your support and the stories. It helps. smile

I would never take one of my pets to the vet for its final journey, they deserve to go in the family environment
Surrounded by things they know and sounds they know.

That's a bit harsh on those who don't frown. It's a personal choice based on the owners knowing their pets (and trusting their vet tbh) that's what the pet deserves.

Sorry OP not what you really want to read about knowing what you've recently been faced with but I would never want anyone to feel guilty for not choosing a home visit.

Our Millie had Bullae, she had about a third of her lung removed to treat them, and then ended up with a tennis ball sized tumour in the same lung....she went to the bridge shortly after.

I feel your pain, but its always the right thing, regardless of how hard it is.

23rd of the month will be a year since we took Sally our GS for her final ride , a family dog who grew up with the kids etc . Just been looking at her clay paw prints and reading the sympathy card(again)from the vet has had me in pieces . They reach for your hand but touch your heart .
We luckily have another GS , 4yo nutty Megan who keeps us entertained .Thoughts are with you OP at a difficult and horrible time .

I have a horrible feeling we're getting to the end of our time with our Boxer/ Border Terrier cross Meggie. She's not in distress, but she's slowed right down since Hattie (my Jack Russell/ Dachsund cross) suddenly died at the end of January. She's not showing as much interest in people of little Daff (our 5 month old pup). Been off her normal food, but loves some posh dog food and chicken breast. We're taking it one day at a time, but we know the end is near soon cry

But I'm going to try and be positive. She's about 13 years old, old for a Boxer, and has lived in Doggie heaven with us (we are surrounded by woodland!) We've shared some incredible and funny memories together, and she's not in distress (I just find it difficult because she's been with me for the majority of my life).
